So here we start...I have bought, from a mate (some mate, thanks!) a 1988 CSW 110 with a 200tdi engine fitted. I hope I can figure out how to add photos so you can see it.
Its been stood for four years and was covered in moss and slime - thats gone now. I have had it checked over and the following snags have been listed:

Various lights not working
No brake lights
an indicator not working
Headlamps rubbish
wipers
battery security
Bonnet catch
OSF door frame rotten around lower hinge
FOS chassis corrosion
Rear cross member holed
Central body mounting corrosion both sides
Front propshaft UJ worn to excess
Centre silencer broken
F to R brake pipe corroded
F radius arms bushes split both sides
Slight play in both front axle swivels
Rear lower shock bushes
NSR wheel bearing needs adjusting
MSR axle cup missing

So thats my snagging list. The vehicle also needs the Brownchurch roofrack cleaning and painting and the whole Landy repainting. I intend to do what I can in my drive and get professional help for the rest. I think we can tackle the UJs, welding etc and all the lights I guess. I will paint by hand myself and then hopefully end up with a respectable working 1988 110.

Any advice will be welcomed, especially about the order to do the work and the whereabouts of a door frame!!

Ill work on photos!

David

ps, I have never done this before and I barely know the names of all the parts so if I appear to be a doofus it's because I am one. My day job is a tad different...

All descriptions are spot on. Repair pieces can be got for the door frame.
Centre body mount, if it's the one I think you mean, can only be replaced with the body off I think. Although I think a 2 piece after market one is available.
Being as the rear cross member is knackered too it might be an idea to remove the tub anyway to give excellent access for the repairs.
Be aware though! A bigger job usually breaks out when you start removing the tub!

Thanks for that. The idea of removing the tub seems a step to far for me...might be a job for the local 4x4 place and that would put the price up. Would that then be a full chassis replacement though?

This the thing unwashed as I collected it.

Looks tidy but then again they all do:rolleyes:
The body cross member IS the one I was on about. Body off or a two piece one. Maybe cut and weld back together a standard one.
What's the bulkhead like?
Inspect around the door hinges, the vent flap areas and the footwells.
Where the bottom of the windscreen frame sits is a common rot spot too.

Bits and bobs getting done now. Going to need a new drivers door though, or at least a frame...then maybe the other three as well.

Ive been sorting out lights recently, but before I rip out wires I thought I'd ask...

The rear and front OS running lights have failed. The brake light works now ive cleaned it, but the side light doesnt, nor at the front.

It could be coincidence I know, or the crap lights which I am changing, but it could be a case of "ah yes, thats because...". So I thought I'd ask!

Ive got new lights on order and a pair of headlamps too.

Done the minor things now like reseating door window glass, fixing lights etc so today saw my 110 going to a friendly mechanic who will fix the UJs, shocks etc for me and do the welding. As my landy pulled up his little eyes lit up at the prospect of all the fun hes about ti get.
Im also having the vehicle blown over in bronze green with a white top (it is green and white already but very tired looking.

Still after door/s but once its back on the road i can start looking for things as i use it.

Very exciting time !

I'm really going to enjoy reading your updates as I have a similar CSW (1992 in blue) and all 4 doors are being rebuilt.

We all have our own priorities of course, but my view is that you're mad to paint it at this stage. Let me share how I like to do things:
  1. Get it through MOT
  2. Use it
  3. Maintenance
  4. Get everything working
  5. Upgrade equipment if you have specific use planned
  6. Cosmetic improvements.
I'm not even off level 1 with my CSW, but my 110 V8 is at level 3 and rather than seeing jobs whenever I get in, I just enjoy it.

Your views are valid, but the quick blow over will help protect the metal work and make the vehicle look MUCH better than it does. It really looks riugh right now and i dont like driving stuff that looks so bad. Thats all. I will likely end up reworking paint but its small fry really.

Otherwise i agree with your schedule of works!
Will you start a thread?

Cheers!

I don't do a lot of the work myself, but there is this for my 2 door https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/timc1967s-110-slow-project.249761/, which I need to update. My CSW is in the workshop getting doors rebuilt.

Im really interested in rebuilt doors...are you fabricating new frames for.good skins or vice verca? My doors are good but with rotten frames...if i could weld angle to form a frame id be well away.

My tame mechanic has been working on my door frames as a background project. The frames were badly rusted right up to the window opening. He has completed 1 door reconstruction and its very solid - basically a new door frame. I am pleased because it will use the original skin and equipment and will all match in, no respray required. He has constructed tooling along the way which will allow him to do more doors in future. I didn't like what I was seeing on the used market, and new doors have the disadvantage of needing fittings and paint.

More doors you say...

Can we talk numbers? Like how much to repair my doors?

D
I'm not giving any details until he completes mine :p he needs no distractions, but its cheaper than buying 4 new doors, all new fittings, glass, reassembling and then repainting the whole car. To be honest, not a lot cheaper. :(

I too wouldn't bother painting it until you have some miles on it.... and the other thing I'd say.... is...... get a tracker on it ASAP - with the way the sticky fingered types are going after them, IMHO, you'd be daft not too :)

Thanks for the info. I have started to wonder about a full new chassis...is that megabucks?

D

there are places which advertise being able to do it for about £4K - but IIRC, they leave out a lot of the stuff you'd be daft not do whilst it is stripped - like brake pipes and suspension bushes....
