Yes you are correct regards the wiring.

What you say regards the cable makes sense actually.

Yes the solenoid splits in half...but looks ok.

One thing...There appears to be some charring on the solenoid and the black wire - if you look closely - the insulating tape at the solenoid end is a bit...'crispy.' I assume something has heated up too much here.

What do you guys think??? try just a new solenoid at £23ish or just go for starter motor?

I'm a bit clueless - todays findings and posts are really just me learning my way with this...which is good because I have already learned how to bench test starter and also how to short/bypass? solenoid.

I just wish I could figure it out and fix without spending loads of money because I don't know if I will keep the engine or not.

But its currently sat facing downhill on my very steep driveway and I need to get it started so I can reverse it up the driveway (gets even steeper towards end) into my garage to get to work properly.

My driveway is a nightmare. Took 8 men just to roll this backwards off trailer on the hill and we only just made it.
 
You can change out the solenoid but often the solenoid has gone because the motor windings are worn and drawing too much current. IMO you are best off taking the starter motor to an auto electrician that rebuilds them to get it properly inspected and see what needs doing from there.

Sounds like the ideal driveway for a bump start :)

3rd gear, ignition on, clutch in. Release clutch when you have built enough speed.

Make sure your brakes work first :eek: and have your 8 friends on standby in case it fails. If you know someone else with a landy you could always get a tow start.
 
james martin is the man for all part numbers, Id get it bumped by draggin it with another truck (do not ever ever ever call it a jeep, tut tut :)... )

when you put 12volts to the little spade connector the starter should plunge out, If the motor is just spinning inside its case it wont do anything, it has to pop out its turtle head if you get me. I haven't checked the vid so forgive me if you have already checked that. Get it bump started i think. I personally wouldnt bother with another solenoid!! Id just get a second hand motor, are you on Facebook? Maybe there are some land rover breakers around you.
 
Ahhh I don't mean the Landy...

I was referring to the jeep Im driving at the moment (banged up but surprisingly reliable Frontera B)...I was connecting starter to its battery whilst it was running to avoid draining the new Landy battery.

Well theres the thing...the cog in the starter isnt tucked away...its already sitting out.
 
Hmmm frontera should be able to drag the landy then mate?..

Get a decent strap and a friend, drag it down the road and see if it bumps with some fresh fuel ect. Thats what i would do.

It's really not worth messing about with a dodgy starter - if you get it working, it will just let you down when you need it most - guaranteed!

Personally, I would get it rebuilt, that way you know you've got a good quality starter. It will probably cost in the region of £80 to rebuild but a decent replacement will be a lot more than that or as suggested earlier, a second hand one.
 
Ah flip...I still havent taken photos of the Landy. I might actually head out tonight and take a few with flash.

No havent tried to bump start yet as haven't got anybody to call on to help....and still worried that if doesn't start then there is no way its getting back up drive as cant be towed as too narrow for tow vehicle to get back out and already tried to push it up with jeep but the jeep's plastic bits couldnt cope.

I have spotted Britpart starter for about £90 inc vat (def the correct one). This a better option than paying to get the old one fixed?

Meant to say, whatever you do, don't buy a Britpart starter - there is a reason they are half the price of any other. You will be replacing it a couple of weeks or months later (if it works in the first place).
