1980's Rangie with Russian diesel engine

Thought this might be of interest. I came across this old photo I took whilst doing environmental survey work in Finland in 1982. The Range Rover was used to tow a boat trailer around Finland. The original petrol engine failed so the Finns took advantage of a Russian built diesel engine and fitted that in its place. I remember it pulled like a train but left a smokescreen in its wake that'd have it pulled up by the police these days. I think the engine was a 4 cylinder diesel out of a Russian ex-military vehicle and was about 4 litres.

I think the Range Rover was probably 4-5 years old.

nice old monster it will most likely have a andoria 4c90 engine in it (rusky design of perkins lump)

That's the one - I remember someone telling me it was a Russian built copy of a Perkins

they are a cracking engine in standard form and made even better when they went back to the drawing board in the mid 90s and remade the engine in to a turbo lump bags and bags of power, there are a few uazs with the same engine around here and they have a lot of torque, its what the ruskies should have put in them rather than crappy 2.4 petrols

As well as the small boat in the picture we also pulled a 25 ft launch with a cabin from Helsinki to Oulu on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The old Rangie pulled like a train with that engine but left a black smoke screen in its wake. The boat sunk in a storm and we had to get rescued by the coastguard but that's another story..........................
