Another thought, it was not unusual to swap range rover diffs intoa series to "improve" the gearing. My lightweight has had this done to it.
Hi Wildefalcon,Do bear in mind that if you have an ex-mod vehicle it's quite possible that the diff was replaced with a recondition unit in service.
If you really need the full story on your diff contact Nige at 4x4 excess.
Do you have a photo of the rear crossmember? The gearbox crossmember? They are different on military spec. vehicles.

Many thanks for the reply. I have another anomaly. I understand that the chassis number is located on the front spring hanger. I have attached a photo of my hanger (the other side is the same), which looks like there isn’t one and it hasn’t been removed, could it be anywhere else.Other than colour, ex MOD types often have extra non standard bracketry where military equipment was fitted, Holes and shading where unit badges were fitted. Extra driving info signs in cab. However in the 70's 80's the MOD did purchase a batch or two of standard Landy's when there was a shortage as the result of things like the Falklands war.
On Landy's of 30 years plus who knows what parts have been changed so numbers on them may be of limited value. Some pics may help.

It could be rechassied, there were non galv aftermarket chassis on the market for a few years.

The engine thats in, is an MOD Lightweight (951XXXX), reconed in 1993 and fitted to mine not long after.No number there although could be a little higher up. Any sign of that leg [ commonly called dumb iron] being replaced ? Welds back at the front cross member. Chassis looks non military but green on flywheel housing ma be military. [ note my previous post ]

Hi. Just registered on the Merlin site hoping to get better access, although I can’t seem to find where I could download a database file? The search area is throwing up a 404 fault code at present, so will have a new look later.When I was looking, I was able to do it myself. You download a number of Excel/ ods workbooks and search them.

Many many thanks for this, I take it you have trodden a road similar to this yourself. I went to a LR show yesterday – The classic land rover gathering. Found out there were many chassis without serial numbers, so not so confused about that one now.
Unfortunately, the VIN number is not in the spreadsheets. So not MOD. So for 10 years pre V5 registration?
