Hi guys
I've been doing a few bits n bobs on the 2a today and whilst I was in the engine bay I decided to remove the paint covering the engine number and to my surprise it started with 12J, long story short this engine used to be in my 1988 90 that I have since sold on with a replacement engine fitted and I have fitted this engine into my 2a rebuild, when I bought the 90 I was lead to believe the engine was a Defender 200tdi engine fitted by the p.o ( was originally a 2.5TD ) so would have though a 19J engine's serial number would start with 19J or am I missing something ?

12j is a 2.5NA, 19j is a 2.5 TD.

Absolutely, if the engine was a Defender 200tdi it would have been a 11L
Extract from http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/tdiguide.htm
200TDi engines come in three flavours, identified by the engine number which starts 11L, 12L or 13L.

11L - this is the version used in Defenders from 1990

If you have a 12J it should be N/A as @Turboman says. Like you say, in 1988 the 90 was fitted with a 19J (like my 1987 was). Mine has a 12L 200tdi from a Disco 1 in it now.

Interesting, I didn’t think there was much difference between 12J and 19J except the turbo, although the 19J should be strengthened. Has it currently got the turbo fitted?

There is no difference between a 12j and a 19j, except for the Turbocharger and manifold intake, and a drilling in the block for an oil feed for the Turbocharger. The later 19j also have coated pistons, to prevent the melting and cracking of the piston crowns that was common on the earlier engines.

I think the OP was working on the number rather than the physical appearance :)

Not what he says. First post says he never saw the number until today, but fitted the engine in a Series at some previous time.
Difficult to fit an engine without noticing if it has a turbocharger, which is why I suggested that he post pictures of the engine for positive identification.
The blocks of all three engines are very much the same, so it could be a Tdi assembled on a 12j block that has been drilled and tapped for turbo oil feed.

If it is running ok, and doing a job for you, not sure what the problem is?

Why not post some pics of the engine, we can tell you what it is?
Before I took the engine out it was running fine and pulling like a train but the timing case was damaged where the power steer pump bolts to the timing case and as I didn't want to be off the road for to long it was easier to fit another engine to the 90 and do the work on the original 90 engine supposedly a Def 200tdi but I ended up selling the 90 to pay for son's wedding last year and decided once I had sorted the Def engine out ( re-dressed as a Disco engine ) using a Disco timing case and new Disco turbo I fitted the engine into the 2a swb rebuild I am doing at the moment, then today I decided to look at the engine number.

So it looks like I had a 2.5TD redressed as a Defender 200tdi and then redressed as a Disco 200tdi by me
Oh and as the engine number matched up with the number on the keepers form I didn't think much about it till now :)

I wasn't aware the 200tdi heads where compatable with the 19j block, they certainly look different. Also, isn't the injection different?

Fair enough. I wouldnt be happy, having just swapped a 19j for a 200tdi, I wouldnt be impressed.
Yeah i was a bit mift when i first saw it but after doing a lot of thinking and reading what everyone's said on here i can now see through it all so as said it should be ok.

Yeah thats was part of the reason i went looking as the rebuild is slowly coming to the end.

The only thing i'm worried about now is a while back when i had the engine on the bench and removing the head, sump and ladder frame to replace leaking gaskets and seals as well as a new head gasket as a matter of course i noticed the valves didn't didn't have the cups between the valves and rockers and fitted new ones, the engine turnes over by hand ok so hopefully it should be ok but wonder if i'm better off removing them again, what do you think.
