110 Transmission Clunk

Had my 1999 110 TD5 two weeks now, not new to Land Rover, but new to the Defender.

When I let the clutch out the there is a clunk like a UJ has worn on the rear prop-shaft but there is no vibration during running.

I'll be getting underneath it this weekend, but are there any common faults for this?

very common, usually because of play on the clutch release lever

if it is this, you need get used to slipping the clutch and not dumping it

I've never heard the clutch being responsible for a clunk before.
Don't mean it isn't true though.
A frame ball joint is a very likely suspect , mounted top of rear axle.
Edit- td5 just noticed!
Dual mass flywheel on them is there?

I would agree with that. First port of call would be the A frame ball joint as it is easy to chack and relatively easy to replace if you change the yoke as well. Bit more difficult if you try to press the ball joint out of the old yoke.

Could still be clutch related but checking all of the suspension joints and UJ's is an easy and free way to narrow down the problem.

My TD5 the clunk on take up was the bearings on the drive spiggot out of the engine block that the flywheel sits on were worn possibly because I have a heavy duty flywheel and there was a lot of play. When I rebuilt the engine earlier this year that bearing was replaced and other than accidentally dumping the clutch no more clunk
