Please could anyone clarify how much a Defender can legally tow, with a braked trailer and driver who passed his test yonkers ago!
I have a mate who wants to tow a three ton vehicle behind a landrover, but suspect this is too heavy. It will probably pull it, but not legally.:confused:
Any ideas?
Thanks, JIm

I think it depends on what sort of a driving licenses you have. If you have one from ages ago which also allows you to drive up to a 7.5 tons then you should be OK. A 110 defender normally weights in around 2 ton. A 110 can tow up to 3.5 tons.

3.5 tonnes if the trailer is braked and the driver passed their test as long ago as I did :D:D:D

Course it also depends on the MAM of the trailer. It needs a plate which says it is 3.5 tonnes.

Think if the trailer has hydraulic brakes, you can tow more. Open to correction though.

Not round here...

override brakes only, not saying hydrauly ovverides dont exist, but if they do it make no difference on what you can tow.

Basically, 3.5T is the max legal limit a vehicle can pull a: on a standard ball coupling amd b: on override brakes, IIRC the defender (older ones at least) are rated to tow up 7T (ish) IF you use a seperated braking system, ie air braking systems.

Is the vehicle to be towed 3 tons? Cos a decent plant trailer or car transporter trailer will be heavy. If its total weight of car n tailer then it'll be fine

Remember last we talked about trailer brake systems:) If it is a USA built trailer than you can have electric braking system as there are UK/EU approved electric controllers for them:D

missed that post (off to look now) last time I looked, was with an interest in airstreams, and there was no option than to convert the braking system then...
Im guessing they still work on the overide principal though.

That is where i saw the mentioning air stream/Us made trailers

There probably more info out there with the right search question. Now the NAS Land rover have the trailer tow package on them with a electric brake system for our trailers.

Ahh, knew I had the wrong end of the stick somehow. It was with air-braking system I was thinking of.

What exactly is he hoping to transport? 3t is a pretty heavy vehicle to be putting on a trailer unless its a mini digger or something.

Oh bugger!

Does that mean that I shouldn't have towed a fully equipped fire engine ... complete with it's 7-man crew?
