110 steering box replacement

Can anyone adivise me on this?
The steering box is leaking and I have been told it need to be replaced, they are quoting nearly £800 for a new one???

First off how urgent is it, and secondly is that the right price/
I have been told it could be re-conditioned which will be a lot cheaper so will probably go down that route.
Seems also Landrover dont have any in stock and it will be after the end of Jan before I can get one.

Can someone tell me if it's bad to leave it too long? what will happen? will I just lose power steering?, so long as I keep the fluid topped up will that do until I get a new one?

Fook me how much???? £80ish quid from Paddocks and ya old one in part ex. If it's a little leak throw a cap ful of brake fluid into the PAS fluid reservoir. as it makes the seal swell slightly and this will often cure the problem. £800 is a fooking ripoff. Where are you based and what year is ya 110??

I am in Buckinghamshire and the 110 is a 2007

OOH that's a bit new for my database!! but even so £800 seems like an awful lot of money I'd fone round a few garages. changing it int gonna be a specialised job. any decent spanner monkey should be more than capable of sorting it.

Hmm, I guess that £587 would be about right then you add the fitting and hey presto the magic £800... :-(

As said above, try a cap full of brake fluid in the powersteering resevoir, it'll make the seals swell and stop the leak. It won't damage anything either,so you've nowt to lose giving it a try.

Thanks folks, if it carries on leaking (which is fairly slow) is it OK to leave it a while, say till after Xmas so long as I keep the level topped up?

Yes, it's almost impossible to fix the steering box so it never, ever leaks. Having looked under hundreds of the things they all have damp boxes..... ahem.

that's not quite true, lots of peeps spend £15 on a seal kit and expect it to cure 20+ years of wear - find what's worn, replace it with quality parts and it's last another 20+ years leak free

Holy **** £800

I'll stick with the guy I've used for the last 7 years

Bought my 1994 110 300 TDi about a month ago

he's supplied and fitted

full cambelt kit
alternator
2nd hand steering box
fuel and air filter

parts and labour came to £305

Then I supplied a 2nd hand salisbury axle with drum brakes, he swapped my discs onto the new axle and fitted it for £240

I'd feel like i'd been shafted if I paid 25k for a defender that needed a £800 steering box at 3 years old, if it's got a full service history and is only recently out of warranty i'd be going back to where I bought it for some goodwill payment towards that bill

PAS box - 3 bolt - recon - RHD (sold on an exchange basis - price includes 100.00 GBP exc. VAT surcharge) - DEFENDER

It comes to over £115 in the end when you pay vat and collection etc

Whilst i wait till the festive season is over and I can sort out a recon box, can anyone tell me what level the fluid should be? I cant find a level indicator anywhere so topping up is a bit hit and miss.
BTW been told by the local Landie chap (Dingocroft) that adding fluid to the puma engine steering box is not a good idea, works on older vehicles but not on this one and the fluid must be the right type or it can make leaks worse over time, seems when folk get the vehicles services by non-landie dealers they often put in the wrong fluid which then creates the problem in the first place. Not what I did but handy to know all the same.
