110 into a 90

Currently have a 110 300tdi.

Plan is to buy a 90 galvanised Chasis, and make a tray back.

What am I obliged to do from a legal perspective, informing the dvla? What do I tell my insurance? What issues do tray backs have when going through MOTs?

I don't like the look of 110 tray backs.

My 110 body is shagged! Really I brought it as a doner vehicle for this project.

Can it be done legally?
 
I would imagine you would need all sorts of checks and approvals for a radically altered chassis.

And then it would need a specialist insurance policy too.
 
As far as i can see, its a 110. If you rebuild it as a 90, it wont be a 90 - it will be a modified 110, if that.

I know you have the 110, but it really seems like your life would be easier if you found a 90 as the donor.
 
I understand that. It's not radically altered just a standard Land Rover front. On a standard Land Rover Chasis albeit a shorter one with standard Land Rover suspension and axels.

I think that this statement is more wishful thinking than following the wording in the directives.:D

What you're going to do is build a vehicle that will cost you extra to insure, you will have to explain to the insurers every year. It will get the attention of any coppers who are using ANPR. And be worthless. I was going to rebuild a range rover on a discovery chassis but realised it's just not worth the legal hassle. DVLA are not on your side either when it comes to mods.
 
I cant find the gov document that this is from, but the statement crops up on forums all over, so it must have come from somwhere -

If the vehicle has less than eight points, a second-hand or altered chassis, frame or monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must have IVA, so that it can be registered. A 'Q' registration number will then be issued,

Basically, you can do all sorts of stuff, but the chassis is some sort of untouchable. And that's exactly what you are proposing to change.
 
If it starts as a 110 chassis you can only replace with a like for like replacement part ie a 110 chassis if you want to avoid iva otherwise it falls under the radically altered definition .
