Hi,
Usually I can be found in the shiny Range Rover pages but I'm fed up with my Renault trafic van and fancy a Defender to cart all my plumbing and heating tools, fittings and boiler parts around the Midlands.
Whilst a 110 looks to be the beastie to go for, is it a practical motor to use everyday. I have seen advertised ex Water Board vehicles for 10k which look to fit the bill but what should I look out for when buying, and what about reliability.
Any advice gratefully received. Many Thanks

I recently bought a 2002 110 with 120000 miles on the clock, and shes purring like a kitten:) if you know what to look out for you can pick up a pretty tight defender for good money, this is a good site for what to look out for if its an older defender The Land Rover Buyer's Guide - by Glencoyne 4x4 (Thetford), or this, Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - What to look for..... these are pretty usefull siites. as for how good they are for lugging stuff around, i had a thousand phonebooks in mine last week, it was a walk in the park for it. theres loads of load space in it and id seriously recommend it:)

Thanks for the advice. The Renault will only do 25 -28 round town lugging stuff so I'm sure a 110 should be comparable. I guess i just fancy something more interesting. Presumably the newer the better or are there some older gems to be had, is the TD5 engine the one to go for or best avoided?

I wouldn't recommend a 110 for a replacement for a panel van-crawling in to get stuff isn't recommended.

basically if an estate car will **** you off-110 will be worse.

what type was the renault i had a vivaro same as the traffic if its that model you had and lugging flooring around i would get 600 miles on a tank and thats not driving it steady as it was firms fuel

id say a 110 was fine for lugging tools about but there is lots of space and with a 300tdi she will have more than enough towing and full of tools head room aint great but there is defo space

A 110 is great for lugging tools around but you need to sort out racking or sections inside it otherwise you end up with everything covering the entire floor space with loads of unused space above it.

My 110 doubles up as a work van and the family car.
It's no substitute for a large (Transit type) van, but I've got a roof rack and a trailer for the big stuff.

Treworgey, many thanks for your post. I love the defender it's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for, so much better than a van.
It's silly things like opening the rear door that concern me, I'm in and out the van 20 times a day, will the rear door hinges and locks take that kind of abuse especially with the spare wheel on. How old is your Defender it looks great, presumably it's not a commercial but a converted county?

Wiltshire. Yes I can get some decent mileage out of the Traffic on a run but most of my work is local, usually 2-3 miles max, then the consumption is dreadful. Cheers.
