110 gearbox change(what should I do)

Right chaps,

Going to be changing my gearbox/trans box in the very near future.

I going to buy a secondhand g/box and t/box, hopefully from an honest seller.

What would you do;

Split g/box and t/box just to make sure the input shaft is ok.

Split g/box and t/box, and if input shaft is ok, fit new ashcrofts input gear in the t/box, might as well do it whilst they are apart.

Just fit g/box and t/box and trust the sellers word.

Come on chaps, shoot me down in flames for asking the question.

ashcrofts input gear ?just remove pto cover from t/box and check splines if its a defender t/box input gear will pull out ,if gears got holes its already the later cross drilled type

What have you got now? You'll be very lucky to get a good second hand LT77 long stick, they are like gold dust, better to get yours reconned. Tfer boxes don't wear out as bad and there are plenty 2nd hand disco ones about if you don't mind the higher gearing - but check what ratio u currently have. The ashcrofts site has loads of useful info that will help you identify exactly what one you have.

Ring this bloke coventry area so you would have to travel, i have used him a few times dead honest & specalises in landrover gearboxes & does a good job, cs gears 07733466478 & speak to Colin

What transfer box do you have now? Is it 1.66? (assuming it is as you have militray 110) If so then its a big difference going from that ration to the 1.2 disco box. Ive got 1.2 (ashcroft recon) in my 110 (ex military 110 with 200tdi).-
