Hello All,

I have bought my 1st Landrover ex-military LHD 110 Defender 2.5 NA year 1986.

Whilst driving on the road in high box diff lock off, I heard a clunk and lost drive. I put it into diff lock and drove home. Removing the inspection plate under the middle seat showed that the prop shaft spins in high and low box but provides no drive. If I re-select diff lock it drives normally. I also suspect that a rear wheel bearing is broken, could it be related?

Any ideas? any help much appreciated.

ok so the rear propshaft spins = connection to wheels lost between the diff input and wheels. I suspect as already said a shaft has snapped. You are lucky really. One its a rear and 2 you have a salisbury axle.
Take out the shaft that you suspect the wheel bearing to be faulty. If the bearing is really shot the shaft would have taken alot of strain. Take this out it may or may not be broken. Also worth a mention is drive flanges these often wear out. If your super super lucky its a rear drive flange. If not remove both shafts to gind the broken part. From the other side put a small dia tube to knock out the broken bit from the diff, drain diff and remove debris. I would take the pan off and check thoroughly. Then replace all broken shafts.
Could be worse could be the front. Jai
