110 extremely slow up steep hills even in 1st. Normal?

The OP was saying that since he had BIGGER tyres than standard, he should ADD 10% to his speedo reading, when in fact the opposite is true. With larger tires you subtract a percentage from the speedo reading to get a more accurate one.

Bigger tyres = larger circumference = less revolutions per unit distance travelled by the vehicle at a given speed = UNDER reading speedo = ADD a percentage to the apparent reading for a true figure.

MY 200TDi on 265/75 tyres says 60 on the speedo when doing 65 on the GPS.

Physics innit.

Now say sorry.

:eek::D

Even so, the OP should be able to get a bit more go out of it than that. My 200 TDI powered 110 does 80mph happily (GPS readout) and it hasn't had a decent service for a while.

While you are looking - check that the Turbo boost wastegate linkage is actually connected.

This symptom is EXACTLY like a mates 90 300TDI. New turbo was fitted, but it wasn't really going well - the linkage hadn't been connected......

something aint right there then, when we went to whitby this year through the penines with 4 people and luggage my 300tdi 90 was goin up hills at 50/60mph with a run up and didnt really decrease in speed. id say its getting starved of fuel so check ya sedimenter and give it a good service, also like other people have said check the diagprham in the injector pump.

My truck is very similar to the OP's in performance and emits no smoke at all once she is warmed up - going up Snowdonia last week was a slow job.

I reckon its time to take a look at the pump diaphragm?

Might explain a lot.

As for speedo readings my experience is they overread fairly uniformly at about 7/8%. however just to be fair our 2009 Megane overreads by 5%.

This is reference only - if you blow your engine up it's down to you ;)

200 or 300 Tdi - only. Injection pump is on the drivers side of the engine just behind the timing cover. On top of it there's a square/rectangular plate held on by four slotted screws - undo the screws, they'll be tight. Carefully, WITHOUT TURNING THE DIAPHRAGM UNDER THE PLATE AROUND, move the plate off the diaphragm. If it's stuck to the plate it'll be obvious. Then check the diaphragm isn't split. If it is, replace.

Cheers,

Thanks Adz, Ill give it a good coat of looking at:)

So how do I go about checking the sedimenter? My mechanic does everything for me, but I'd like to know how to do these things myself.

I of course meant 23cm tyres and not 23". My mistake. I'd measured the diameter in inches and the thickness in cm. Doh.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand. Definitely sounds like there's something wrong so I'll have to get it booked in for a service and get my mechanic to check out all the things you guys have suggested as I know nothing about cars.

Don't get me wrong, with a good run up and if I maintain my revs it'll steam up hills. But if for some reason I have to stop half way up a hill, say behind another slow driver or for a wandering sheep, then actually getting going again is what's a struggle.

I'm trying to gauge how much of this is limited performance due to the size of the vehicle - I've just gone from driving a Focus estate 1.8 turbo diesel to driving this behemoth.

Oh and for grown men, you guys bicker a lot. :D

I've looked into all the symptoms you have described, cross-referenced them with hundreds of other posts, and I've come to one conclusion.

It must be red. Don't let the smart grey metallic paintwork fool you, it is in fact a red 110 in disguise. :D

Seriously though, my 200 TDI likes to be warmed up a bit before going up very steep hills or before it will allow any form of 'acceleration'. It depends how steep this hill is, after all the 110 is much heavier than any 'normal' car you may have driven up there, and is probably a lot less powerful than the cars you might have driven in the past. It is also a much slower process to change gear in a 110 than it is in a normal car, so that might be contributing to your poor performance uphill - you lose too much momentum trying to go from 1st to 2nd.

Still, give it a service (should be standard practice for any newly acquired vehicle) and see if anything improves.

Worth noting that, provided everything is working as it should, you'll get peak torque at between 1,800 and 2k rpm - if you keep changing down the box before it gets that low you'll just get slower and slower.

Don't change down until you're almost down to tickover in a Tdi - peak power (100bhp ish) just doesn't compare well to peak torque (200lbft ish.) when it comes to climbing hills.

Finally got this problem resolved and it was something so simple I can hardly believe it.

A mechanic I was speaking to popped the bonnet, undid four screws and slightly rotated the fuel regulator diaphragm. Feels like a new vehicle now. Amazing.

Not saying yer slow or anything but has it taken nearly 7 months to undo 4 screws?:eek::eek:
