Going to fit some new LED headlights this weekend. They come with a daylight running light facility that operates of a switch live. Where is the best place to take this feed from under the bonnet? Want to try and make the install both neat and easy without having copious amounts of wire trailing everywhere.

They are supposed to be on during the day. DRL.
Even if the light unit is designed to be DRL the question still stands
Why would you want your lights on in daylight.
DRL are in my opinion for people who are too lazy to drive properly and switch their lights on. They are also not that much use as DRL only light the front lights, taillights are just as important and do not come on until you switch on the sidelights. If you wanted DRL on your defender you would be better off hooking up the sidelight circuit to an ignition switched relay so you get both front and tail lights lit on the ignition.

Yes and no.
I think your right about rear lights coming on aswell as fronts. I assume that DRL,s are for pedestrians, cyclists and the like who are liable to pull out or cross in front of the vehicle.
Not so much too lazy to put lights on, just forgetful / stupid.
Volvo and saab got it right, lights on with ignition.

I don't see why you'd want perm live. Just put on sidelights circuit and turn on sidelights when get in;
My van ones more annoying soon as you turn on ignition headlights come on so you have to turn to sidelights unless you want headlights always on. Seems bit pointless giving you a light dial when you can't even turn them off
