110 2nd row middle seat belt!

Hi,
i have been looking for a safer option for the lap seat belt in the rear centre seat of a 110.
I have read a few Posts on this but I have an issue.
I have found these...

Both are exmoor trim and both can be bought via brookwell.

I contacted both brookwell and exmoor trim with a view to getting a solid answer from them direct. How suitable are these seatbelts for a Defender 110? (both websites state they are suitable, I wanted more info on fitting).

To my supprise...Exmoor trim would not suggest retro fitting seatbelts and brookwell would not reccomend either of these products! Neither could suggest an alternative apart from a new forward facing seat in the rear!

Well done to both companies for being honest and not trying to flog me something for the sake of it though.

Both stated that the load area would be used up as both products required mounting brackets at a 45 degree angle for the shoulder harness.

However....this still does not help me with a safer seatbelt option.

Has anyone fitted these to the original seats and do you have pictures? Does it take up the rear area?
Any other suggestions for the middle seat option?

Mines has an inertia reel fitted to the middle rear, doesn't take up any room with the seats up, but obviously if you fold the seats down, you then have an inertia reel sat in the middle of the load bay rather than just the lap belt.

not looked closly at the mounting angle, Ill get back to you later on that!!

Picture would be great. Was it exmoor trim? I take it from mot point of view you've had no problems?

Ive not MOT'd it myself yet, but have no reason to believe its been an issue, the centre front seat has have a 3 point put on it too.

As a thought....what about internal rollcage in rear section with the 4 point harness attached to roll bar on roof lining? Would still be able to keep bench seats either side...

..the roll cage senario seemed expensive but having looked on the web there are companies that produce 'harness bars' like in a rally car. The 4 point harnes would fit a few inches behind the rear seats. This would allow the rear load area to still have the bench seats. I have emailed a number of companies to find out who can produce one to fit Defender 110 and ill post if I get a reply.

didnt get chance to get any photos last night, will try again this evening (should be home before 9.30!)
the harness bars would be ok, if you never needed to fold the seats down, wouldnt work for me, one of my hobbies is sound engineering, I need the full loadspace for that!

Hi,
I had the same problem in my 110. I bought an Exmoor trim 3 point seat belt for the middle seat. The problem is preventing the shoulder belt from sliding off your shoulder. I made a frame to prevent a load sliding into the back of the seats, and also a dog guard that can be slid up and down the two heavy duty uprights. On one of these uprights I have mounted an angled roller for the shoulder belt to run in. Pics attached....
Works well for me.

Hi I have the same problem with the front middle seat belt and had the same response from exmoor trim , and I am not sure how to over come it, I like the use of the roller on mikegsxr landy but I wonder how strong it would be in case of an accident.

I, Like you want to keep the rear standard and not have to put folding forward facing seats in, Does anyone have any pics of the correct postion for the inertia reel mounted in the rear?

I also wondered if it would be possible to fit a seat in the middle that already has an integral seatbelt fitted , such as a mini bus type. Even then I do wonder as to how safe it would be and if I would trust strapping my kids into any modified seat.

Please keep me informed of your findings , as much as I love my defender I am starting to wonder if a Discovery would of been a much more practical option.

I have had the seats recovered since the photo but there is a 4 point harness fitted in the centre seat. Bolted through the floor - 2 under the seat and 2 behind the seat. The harness prevents the seat from tipping forward as well. This passed a recent MOT test and I'm more than happy putting my kids in it.

110 2nd row middle seat belt!
