Hi guys. Hope your doing well. I have a LR 101 that I have rebuilt fully, except for the tyres. I was just wondering if you guys know anywhere I can find 6 9.00-16 tyres or equivalent, preferably MT or the original bar grips. Thank you.

Not much in the way of 9.00 x 16 these days sadly. And bar grips are terrible tyres really. If you plan to use the vehicle you'll probably want something that is 70 or 80 years newer.

You might find 9.00 x 16 at some agri tyre suppliers.

But a quick look and pickings are slim....

This leaves old stock military take offs. But are usually pricey.

Or for even more money you could go for these, but bear in mind they are remoulds....

A 9.00 x 16 should be a min of 34" tall, although in reality they could be as tall as 37".

This means something like a 255/85R16 is a tad too short. A 35.10.50R16 wouldn't be hugely off as they should be about 34.5" tall and only slightly fatter.

These are aggressive off road tyres, but in reality are probably better on road and off road than a bar grip and would likely suit styling wise as they have big bar like lugs.

Ok. Where I live in Zimbabwe, we have alot of dry hard packed soil, so the bar grips seem to work well on them, but if I can find some more aggressive tyres to put on it, that would be better. Thank you so much for your recommendation and for the size conversions. I will definitely take that into consideration.

Camac, Portuguese, and peltas do them. There's a toyo open country that does a close 285 r 16.

Then you're into the Indian 9 x 16 cross plys.

Any photos of you 101?

It is the model that has the pto driven winch on the side of the gearbox. It still has the original bar grips on it from new. It was a barn find that we were given for free, and we bought another one in very bad shape for some parts, but we want to build up the other one now. We have the only two left in Zimbabwe, or so we have been told.

In the UK the Peltas have been impossible to get for years.... unless you know of a supply.

I don't think there is any such size as a 285 r 16, do you mean 285/75R216? If so, it is no where close to a 9.00 x 16, way too fat and way too short. They are well under 33".

My mistake. 255/85 r 16.

846mm which is 33 inches.

Close enough for a modern radial tyre, that's specified for the rim width, that's available.

33.1” but still an inch short and likely more compared to many 9.00’s, which as said, they can go as tall as 37”.

A 255/85 can be used but it’s a bit like putting 205’s on a 90……

If you look up the specs. A 255/85 is shorter than an 8.25 x 16, which is the size down from a 9.00.

Well, sure. You'll find exceptions. But the old goodyears on my 101 are NLA, and have worn to less than 33". And still have bar grip left.

The Toyo tyres are available, inexpensive, compared to the Michelin XCL's, and have a decent speed rating.

I'll trade speed for acceleration by them being slightly undersize, but as I've an overdrive, meh.

I'll look into those land dragon, could be good. If they are rated for the rims and the top speed.

Over here(Blighty) we have tarmac, and with bargrips + tarmac + rain i find my buttocks are often so clenched they cramp! I think they get their name from doing everything on road bar grip!

I have a set of MRF 900x16 crossply bar grips on mine, which I bought direct from India.
Compared to the Goodyears they replaced, they are far harder wearing, being a harder compound rubber mix and with a higher ply rating than the tyres they replaced.
The MRF tyres had a slightly different aspect ration.. They appear a larger diameter by around 2" and narrower at 8" wide.
But a great tyre.. You will have a far better chance of getting hold of 9.00x16 MRF Tyres in Zimbabwe.. Failing that speak to
John Craddocks Ltd in the UK, who still stocks NOS 900x16 Goodyear tyres the last time I looked at a very good price.
