hello everybody assistance required please.
i have just become the owner of a 2000 x reg freelander 1.8i.
i picked the car up from sheffield and set off back to teeside everything was fine. after 10 minutes of driving i had a sudden loss of power it would tickover as normal but as soon as i touched the accelerator it would cut out or would not rev smoothly. after leaving the car for a couple of minutes it would start and behave normally for a minute then do the same. i eventually got onto the a1 and found if i kept the revs high it would drive ok so having reached 70mph on the a1 i drove 80miles without a hitch but as soon as i let the engine revs drop low it lost power again. i have been in it again today and drove ok for 10 minutes then did the same thing again.
any ideas would be very appreciated.
thanks.

done 107000 had head gasket done. stripped out fuel pump and filter from tank flushed it out wasnt that bad just a little black. put it back in now wont start but priming up on the ignition.

Is it a distributor cap engine? If not it could be the cam sensor. If it has a cap it could be the rotor arm.

As above, weak spark due to dizzy cap contacts or a duff rotor arm, the resistor in the rotor arm can have hairline cracks in them, causing no spark or intermittent spark.
Resistance can range between 600 - 700 ohms across the two contacts on the rotor arm, the higher the better

Your fuel pump is priming so chances fuel is getting in but flooding due to weak spark, probably a lack of venting in the fuel tank not helping matters?

well cleaned out filter in fuel tank, changed rotor arm and dizzy cap everything seems ok thanks for that but now it is revving high when clutch pressed in at junctions etc.....

i have 1999 t reg 18.petrol that has started to do the same thing again cant drive any longer than to work and back approx 18 miles each way otherwise suddenly loses power and finally dies wait 10 mins and it goes again for about 5 mins before stopping again...suddenly noticed it is going through oil more than before been told by mechanics friend needs a good service plugs dis cap rotor arm etc as well as full coolant flush radiator flush and bleeding properly says as the mileage is 109500 miles the engine is in need of full deep clean and service so looks like its gonna be a bill of around 250 inc parts and labour which he will have it for 2 days to sort things hopefully this will sort the prob did all checks and HGF hopefully

He won't be doing the HG properly for £250!! And I can't quite see how doing the dissy cap or coolant change is going to alter oil consumption?

no hes checked the hg and its fine the 250 is to flush rad replace and re bleed coolant system and full service inc new plus filters etc
