Hi there just bought a Freelander at Auction today. However the engine is knackered. Dont really mind that why it was so cheap!

However can anyone point me in the right direction of a good 2nd hand engine supplier?

Also is there a possability I could fit a different LR engine? 2.0? 2.0T Kseries?

Any comments would be most welcome.

BTW I bought this to sell on, but after looking around it and driving it to my mates garage, I think I am gonna keep it. ITs got all the bits on and in Black Metalic it looks very nice. So privte plate off the mrs Rav 4 and it'll look a million dollars. Then off to Autotrader with the RAV! Sorted.

Go fur the Rover 220 Turbo lump - it fits the same gearbox (with easy mod) and will give yu a super quick reliable motor.

Do a search - several threads on this one

This crossed my mind too. I bought a HGF 1998 Freelander for £550. I was driving a 220 at the time and thought about an engine swap as the 220's body was getting tired.

I ended up stripping the 1.8 (it had to come out regardless) and after inspection decided that it was suitable for rebuild. I used the new improved LR hasket and managed to rebuild the whole lump for under £300.

8,000 miles on and we're motoring ok.

Have a search for 'Project Freelander' thread for more info and pics.

Good luck fella

Steve

Many thanks for your replies.

I am just going to put a K Series 1.8 back in. However these seem to be quite pricey!

I recently bought a RAV4 and replaced the engine for 250 quid. Cant find anythind for the Freelander near that. Any Ideas of a good source on replacement engines? Have tried 247 Spares and all the breakers that called are coming expensive.

Cheers

same here looking at the both options ie the diesel convert and back to spec but when you look at the prices for the standard engines £600 plus,
lots of rover cars do the same engines but its getting a good one thats the problem

good look

is there a way of knowing that the cylinder liner has dropped in 1.8k without opening the head?

Its worth stripping the engine to assess how badly damaged it is. It may be ok and a replacement gasket may suffice.

There are lots of Rover cars about - the 1.6 and 1.8 K series engine use the same block and all of the heads are the same. Obviously 8v and 16v are different.

The increase in capacity comes from longer and shorter con rods. The shorter ones allow more cubic capacity.

The 1.1 and 1.4 use different sized pistons (compared to 1.6 and 1.8), so stick to a 1.6 or 1.8 if you need spares.

Feel free to post up any questions, there are loads of experienced fellas on here who can answer your questions and explain how to test each component.

Regards,

Steve
