Put charged-up battery on P38. Because I had one shot at starting it, I hooked up another battery too. Started immediately and ran great until the water pump let loose. Fortunately, I pulled into my friend's driveway very quickly. New OE pump I got last week already booked in to be fitted at 10am tomorrow. Mr Green Flag due to pick up and transport to mechanic first call. Having oil & filter change at same time. Thinking of running a sweepstake to see what goes next :~|
Thanks for battery issue advice everyone. I'll update you tomorrow when I'm hopefully feeling hooman again! You're a wonderful bunch on here. So glad I came over to the dark side from Terd of Terd Hall blokey... you know whom I mean!

P38 started at first asking again this morning in freezing temperature...had to scrape ice off windows. Looks like I TOTALLY dodged a bullet. Just checked battery voltage again - it's sat around 12.4v most of today, but eagerly starts at turn of key.
Thanks to each of you who chipped-in with your sage advice.
Mike.

Needs charging again;)

Something makes a noise.. i can't isolate it.. could be a coil in a relay somewhere.. really don't know
Think it's actually the dash cluster itself, does that have a fan?
Then something goes click.. relay under the drivers seat? and the hum stops.. no, scratch that.. something in or near the dash cluster clicks off

There is no fan in the instrument cluster or anywhere else for that matter. Relays can emit a hum when they are getting past their best.

I'm house & menagerie sitting for a Lady friend Keith and having to park too far away for me to carry the battery indoors to charge again. I've used it quite a bit today, with it firing up immediately every time. I'll charge it up again when I get home in a few days Keith. I've had a couple of the "TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT" dash messages, but each time it happened, the volt meter readout was north of, or around 13+ volts.

Transmission overheat is usually battery related

Yup! Seen it several times whilst battery voltage was low John, but not when it was over 13v. First time was towards end of climbing up long'ish hill, second time shortly afterwards.
Dodgy battery, faulty alternator, I once had loose battery terminal causing it

I'll double-check the tetminals tomorrow, as I've had issues with +ve terminal previously. Cheers matey. You can keep your job next week ¦~}
+ve on mine aswell. Found loosening off the tapping down onto terminal before retightening cured it
Thanks for the job offer:D:D

The sensor does also fail and/or suffer from corroded connections.
