Evening all,

Just joined the site and thought I'd ask some fellow owners as I currently have no access to a phone nor a local mechanic until next week. The past two weeks my Defender has been misfiring (infrequently on the very odd occasion and today on the way home has clearly indicated something isn't right. My first thought is a fuel injector giving up on me but my main reason for posting is if there is anything I can do myself over the weekend that is worth checking (MAP sensor etc). before I see the local mechanic, I have a new battery to put in, EGR blank and exhaust (had delivered weeks ago and given lockdown was looking forward to having something to do and then looks like other problems are going to need dealing with (F**k sake)…..A list of things to check starting with the simplest leading up to the more technical is what I could do with if you've had the same thing before and is it advisable to stop driving it to work now. Best wishes during lockdown

First port of call would be the red ECU plug under the drivers driver's seat, if you pull off the plug and check for oil in there, it is something that happens to many TD5 defenders.
If it is oily in the plug, then clean it out with a solvent (not too harsh) and look at changing the injector loom under the rocker cover, it will take few clean out sessions to get it out of the loom.

Thanks for the reply buddy, will check the ECU. Can you suggest any cleaners? I know carb cleaner/sensor cleaner would be best but don't have any and i'm not sure what i'll be able to get my hands on, any suggestions?

I used brake cleaner aerosol on mine then wipe it out with kitchen towel, but the rubber water seal on the plug became swollen, so be carefull to remove it first.
I think meths would be ok, you need to use something volatile, and repeat the process every few days until it clears up, but that can only happen when the injector loom is changed (use a quality one)
