02 TD4 engine problems - black smoke etc

Oh no, I here you all say - not another one (have spent 20mins reading every other Td4 owners tales of woe!!)

I gave my TD4 steptronic auto hippo the luxury of a full main dealer service at 84k, and amongst other things it had 2 turbo pipes changed (dont ask me which ones...)

I wanted LR to look at it because it was playing up a little - lumpy running, smoking, lacking power - just the usual TD4 problems. Now after the service it seems much worse, with unparalleled amounts of smoke. Theres a new twist of the engine management light coming on for a few seconds every now and then, after a slight twitch from the engine. It seems more likely to stall now as well.

Have spoken to the dealer again, and they will have a look at it tomorrow morning, but wondered if anyone can suggest anything obvious I can check as well. Or even what I can get the dealer to check - just in case they have forgotten something.

Only advice i can give is to" leave it alone "

Cos the buggers will only blame you fer bustin it and give you the pleasure of paying extra for them to put it right..
just take it back tmorro and growl at em..:D
 
Went back to the LR garage this morning. They plugged the car in to the computer and found there was a problem with the fuel rail something or other. The connector was found to be corroded and dealt with by the mechanic. They spent an hour on it, and did not charge - which was great service.

It certainly seems that the engine is a little more responsive, but time will tell if this is the entirity of the problem - my thoughts are that it will not be the end...!

Hmmmmm, maybe not then.... still loads of black smoke.

...and to add insult to injury, a nice whining noise when I get over 15mph. I think this is coming from the back end, and is possibly the rear diff. Brother in law had a quick look, and we dont think its a wheel bearing.

Another trip booked to the garage.

They said that 2 were split, so I *assume* that they checked them all!!

Booked in for later this week for further diagnostics and a look at the whining back end (not the ex-wife this time!)

A defective maf sensor can also cause smoke and illumination of the warning light.
I've had several emails from owners where the sensor has failed and is outputting too high a signal. The engine will idle okay, but as soon as you touch the throttle it starts to smoke. In one case, it was so bad, it stalled the engine.

I would try unplugging it, this will at least eliminate it!

Reading between the lines, I dont think Gazhyde is too "hands-on" - can yu give a laymans guide to where the maf sensor is and how to unplug it, for those that dont know which end of the engine it might be? and any "Dont do this whatever yu do".

Sorry Gaz if i dont give ya credit - but there must be others out there too.

You do need to remove the air fitler cover which is a pain and requires a long reach 5mm hex (allen) key.
There are 3 bolts (they are captive so no worries about losing them) along the top front edge and one at either rear corner, lower down.
Care is needed to align the cover when refitting - if any of the bolts won't go in, its not aligned.

The maf plug has clips on either end, squeeze them together and the plug will lift out.

I'd recommend the Td4 owner with the 1750rpm vibration to try this as well - some types of maf failiure can also cause vibration, most noticeable through the steering wheel.

A cheaper alternative to a new LR maf is mentioned on the above webpage.
