I can't stop thinking about the depreciation you're paying for

Sadly you cannot win, it is either depreciation or potential unknown repair costs.

Obviously depreciation is not really an issue with defenders, but if you cannot diy repair costs can be interesting!

I sometimes think bangernomics is the way to go.

The main issue with Defenders is they won’t fit in most multi storey car parks.

l actually liked the VW Up, it was the GTi version, but the way my missus looked forlornly at any Defender that she saw, made me realise we had to get another.

Mine went into our local multi storey, cb aerial made a great noise on the ceiling.

The main issue with defenders is you're always concerned where you park it and anyone who buys a vehicle knowing they'll have to block it in to stop it getting nicked is just plain stupid..... I'll happily never own another one I'm afraid.

I can't stop thinking about the money I'm saving at the fuel pump, sadly the sheila has commandeered it for a couple of days which she'd never have done with the disco. On a very big plus point I finally get to fix up my 2a.
2a versus defender is a no brainer for me, tax and mot exempt and with the headlights where they are meant to be

We decided to buy the Defender, fit good security to it, and use it as a car.
That means leaving it in the cinema car park, the airport long stay, the shopping centre car park, and anywhere else that we want to go.
If it gets nicked then that’s it...we won’t buy another.
We’ll buy a nearly new Audi A1.
But unless that happens, we will continue to use it normally.
That’s the thing about the Defender, although on paper it’s crap compared to any modern car, my pristine BMW 3.0 M Sport was literally dusty in the garage (and eventually sold due to lack of use) when we had our last Defender TD5.
We had many great holidays in it
including a road trip in Spain.

Here it is in a typical rural Spanish village, l think we were the only tourists.

Ive gone past that point now, if they nick it I really dont care, well the fact I will have to get home would psis me off but thats it.
But when I first had it it was always where is safe and so on, whereas the D3 I just dump it and walk off.

I really should sell it, maybe one day I will when I can be arsed!

I do see your point regarding theft.
But l don’t want to let the thieves win, at least until we’ve given it a chance.

What's ferrous oxide? Was it a limited edition model?

All land rovers come with it as std, some are greedy and have more than their fair share!
Not sure if freelanders suffer the same fate as even old ones look quite tidy to me?

Though to be fair to land rover what I am reading on various mechs pages is any modern car over 5 yrs old are starting to rust and anything over 10 yrs old is almost certainly shagged!
Apparently ford and vauxhalls are especially bad.

Freelander's never had that option fitted.

My 12 plate Mondeo is rust free on the body panels. Some surface rust on suspension parts.

From what I have read/seen pics its mainly susp parts ford/vauxhall/nissan, some the lower arms have snapped others the subframe has rotten and split behind the plastic undertrays and of course its rare the undertrays even come off so no sees the issues incl the mot man.
