How would you define an "exciting" car.
Would you say a Ferrari qualified? A Porsche? Lotus?

When l had my Ferrari there was rarely any opportunity to open it up. Likewise the Porsche which had over 300bhp and the Lotus which could get to 60mph in 5 seconds. Most of the time l was sat behind other cars or in areas of average speed cameras etc and in those times l would have more fun driving my 110.

My friend has just bought a Tesla Model S 70D. The car is a showcase of technology and has an all electric 4x4 powertrain. Acceleration is frankly mind blowing, it can drive itself (including the steering) and is totally silent inside.

He lent it to me for two weeks and l was still glad to get back in my Defender 110 TD5.

I like mine because of its ridiculousness.
Its not comfy, the ride is hard. It needs constant maintenance and the design is useless. Its heavy on fuel and prone to rot. I have to nurse it every inch when driving and it leaks. There is little security and no mod cons. However it was cheap. The parts are cheap and its easy to work on.
They are also fast becoming uncool. Probably due to the nobs that are the only ones who can now afford them. They seem to want them all to be 'modded' with rows of spotlights and silly stick on plastic bits. Shame really.
Each to their own tho hey lol

I dont know I dont think Ive ever owned an exciting car they are just practical cars, but the kind of people who are jumping on the current defender bandwagon would likely say a ferrari/porsche is exciting and thats what I mean when I say they will move on to pastures new shortly.
I think driving stopped being fun just about anywhere 10 odd yrs ago.

I was looking at Tesla models the other day, bloody hell talk about dear makes even used defenders look cheap!
 
The only driving is fun , in UK now is off the roads , on is just a drudge, anything fast is just a frustration if you want to keep a license . My 110 still makes it bearable , till I get over the channel , but even Europe is getting
more surveillance , but still not crowded.
 
I looked online and the going rate for a new one is £40-50,000.
I don't know if anybody is actually paying those prices though.
Twisted have them FROM £42,000 and that's standard except for a remap, new grille and new wheels.

Driving changed fun-wise 20 years ago, I remember seeing the first speed cameras about then. Never been the same since. On the other hand I have got older, wiser and slower and now the landy suits my driving just fine. But the horns still protrude from my head when I get on a bike, still get on a race track now and again just to scratch the itch. :D:D:D

How much is a Tesla? Never looked them up. We were in Oslo over the summer and there were loads there! A lot more common than Defenders there ;)
 
I have no idea of new prices but was looking at used ones on ebay and the cheapest was 40k.
I like the idea of elec cars, but the common ones Renault/Nissan etc just dont have the range, Tesla does but is 2 or 3 times the price.

The range is 220 miles or 280 miles in "economy" mode.
The next model up has a range of 300 miles.
If you set the satnav for a journey close to the maximum range, it will monitor your driving and tell you how fast you can go in order to make the distance.
So if you have been booting it, and using the battery up, it will tell you to slow down.

Yes there are.

And you can charge it from other manufacturer's charging stations, using an adaptor. Although it's not free to charge at them of course.

A work colleague has a Nissan Leaf. She often tells of nearly running out of leccy. Last time was Saturday gone.

FIL just bought a Nissan Leaf theres two types one 24kw and one 30kw the bigger one also has bigger batteries and a better range, he took me out fo a spin and I was impressed, not with the car as its a generic boring fit all car, but the way it went and the total lack of noise.
Guy at work had a 24kw one and lived 30 miles away and reckoned he would get home with 5 mile range left, now the 30 kw does the same trip with no effort.
FIL reckons the best range from his Leaf is 85 miles and thats if he drives like miss daisy slightest bit of throttle and the range drops like a stone, he also reckons use the a/c or heater and the range drops further.
Where I work they have free to use charging points and a discount scheme to buy the Leaf so apart form the monthly payments would be free motoring, but I cant bring myself to do it!
 
Just adds stress to your life...wondering if you have enough power in your batteries to get you home....having to turn off the fan to save leccy and praying that you don't come across an accident / delay as you may not get home on battery power.

I decided that I had enough of all that when I had a radio controlled car in the 70's and it ran for about 12 minutes!

And they call this progress.
 
Yeah, it must be a nightmare planning journeys. My workmate must have the bigger one as she says it has can do 100 miles on a charge, in theory. It only costs £20 a year for the leccy so cheap motoring, if you can cope with the other hassle!!
 
I reckon for most people with access to a charge point its got to be financially viable, think FIL rents the car on PCP for 250 quid a month, so if you spend more than 200 per month on fuel and you commute is 20/30 miles each way the sums might work very well in your favour.
Not forgetting foc road tax, spend zero money on the car for the length of the pcp, I guess it needs an annual service for warranty.
FIL did say his normal ins company wouldnt touch him and the car?
 
I forgot to add we worked it out at 4.00gbp per charge from empty to full with an indicated range of 85miles but realistically more like 50/60 thats still only equates to 4 litres of petrol cost wise.
