Screws for door card

Hi

Just fitting a new door card to the tail safari door on my 1986 Ninety. Its a simple flat, plastic coated door card from LR Parts - no rear wiper. There's two captive bolts at the top with a couple of "strap" like things that look as though they will hold the top. I was going to go round with rivets but I might want to take it off again to work on the spare wheel bracket so was wondering what are the best self tapping screws that a) will hold the card, b) will look good and c) don't cost an arm and a leg. How are the door cards normally fitted?

I would just use rivets. I have a chequer plate door card and just drill and replace the rivets when I need to remove it.

If you are going to use self tappers make sure they are stainless, they will hold it no problem, especially with some penny washers on them, and they will look basically the same as a rivet so although looking good is subjective they will look no different to many others.

What do you mean by the strap into the captive bolts? the two bolts along the top are for the handle. if it is the later style these like to bend and break off leaving behind the flat piece attached to the bolt. I like to replace this handle with the earlier series style as it is much tougher and does not bend and break.

My son has ali chequer plate on his which is riveted on.
Make sure you use sound deadening pads on the inside of the door and some foam insulation. I also covered the rear of the chequer plate with a foam insulation, it made a massive difference to rattles etc.

Thanks guys. I've realised today that the "straps" are what is left of the handle. It must have broken off with a previous owner leaving two stubs. Before I saw your message, I ordered a s/h early defender one. I've included a link below. Hopefully it will last. If not, can you send a link of the earlier series ones?
