Hi, I’m looking for some advice regarding an oil leak coming from the main gearbox and the best place(s) to look first.
There is an expensive back story to this as I took the car to a highly recommended local specialist, who charged me a four figure some to remove the box, “reseal” it and now 4 months later it is leaking again. I think he has shafted me and when I took it back to him he is hinting that the gearbox may have to come out again. I would greatly appreciate anybody’s thoughts or suggestions.

If you have bills etc for the work done, then he has to get it done, and right, and not at your expense.
Check out the Consumer Protecion Act on the Gov.uk website.

Tell them they have 28 days to to put the work right, and if they do not, you will take your vehicle to another specialist garage to put right their work. If they dont reply, get the work done, and with the report from the garage you take it to, submit a small claims court via MCOL Money Claim Online to get your remedial work costs back. You will have to prove that the work they did caused or failed to resolve the issues you are having. Make sure that the garage you take your vehicle to, will support a claim, as some wont go against another garage.

The courts will put this claim to the original garage, ask them if they want to defend or pay the repairs you instructed to the second garage. You have to prove you offered the original garage 28 days to put the matter right, which is easy with a recorded delivery letter. If they fail to reply to the court, or dispute it, you go to trial, and put your case infront of a judge, who will decide who is right.

It costs about a £100 from memory to submit a claim. I did it with a debt owed to my business, and got about £4000 back from a church that refused to pay an invoice of mine for an electrical install. Takes a bit of time, but well worth the effort. You may find once the court issues a letter to the garage, they change their mind and take a look under "warranty"
