hi, i’ve bought my first landy that has a petrol engine and i’m wondering how to get it to run right.

it’s a series 2a, and the gentleman i bought it off had kept it 22 years and had never done anything other than change the oil. therefore it’s obviously running a bit ****.

i’ve always dealt with diesel. which tends to be a bit easier in terms of getting running well.

it idles poorly. however when i give it choke it runs well. i assumed this meant that the mixture is lean. however when i screwed in the idle mixture screw. the engine got worse. does screwing the screw in make the mixture leaner or richer. also, there is a lot of what i can only assume is water or unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust.

any help appreciated. cheers.

It depends which carb it is. But usually anticlockwise for more fuel. Turn it all the way in then 2.5 turns out as a base line
yeah, so it seems like its running lean then. would a clogged or dirty carb case this? cheers. I have to turn it all the way out to get it to run somewhat ok. even then it's still missing. but ive put that down to the extremely old and. dirty ignition system. ive already bought an electronic ignition kit to replace that. so I guess ill have to rebuild that carb as well to get it running its best

There's so many variables.
Service it top to bottom. Set the tappets.. replace the plugs, replace the leads if they look ancient. The points might be old and burnt but you're replacing with electronic.., check the air cleaner, replace the oil if it's gunky, check the fuel bowl is clear. Then see where you get to.
What carb is on it? It might be knackered
