Hi all, new poster but long time lurker here!

I'm hoping someone can help or offer advice. I’ve recently had the clutch and flywheel replaced on my 2008 Freelander 2 (TD4, manual), along with the gearbox oil and both driveshaft seals.

It drove absolutely fine for around 100 miles after the work was done — smooth, no issues. But after a short 3-mile run involving a steep uphill section, it suddenly developed a very strong jolt under acceleration. It feels exactly like a stall, a strong physical jolt, but the revs don’t drop and the engine keeps going. Engine still runs smoothly at idle and when revved, and is fine under under light load. It rolls fine in neutral, and there’s no issue when coasting downhill. But the jolt is repeatable and consistent under load, especially when climbing hills.

I've taken it back to the garage that did the clutch (small chain who had quick availability but no specialist knowledge of land rovers). They've scanned it and say there’s an IDM fault. I’m sceptical because there's no misfirng at idle or light load, the engine feels smooth, the fault appeared suddenly after load, and the jolt feels very mechanical, not like a misfire flutter. They don't seem to know what's going on but are very focussed on an electircal issue.

Given the recent work and symptoms I’m concerned the issue is more like something in the drivetrain slipping, or a bearing/bracket not torqued correctly/engine/gearbox mount shifted or loose, but they seem reluctant to check and are saying there's nothing in the work they did on the clutch and flywheel replacement that would lead the the issues I've got.

Does anyone have experience of similar symptoms after drivetrain work? Could a driveshaft issue cause a stall-like jolt without affecting engine revs? Or is this more likely to be electrical?

Any advice, similar experiences, or specific things to ask the garage to check would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It does sound ‘mechanical’ from your description, or perhaps the Haldex ‘scrabbling’, which is a known issue on the ecm and an easy fix. From your description of ‘strong physical jolt’, it might not be this, but it’s a very simple check you can do…
Pull the fuse in the boot (FB6) and then giving it a short test drive. See if the issue remains. (You’ll get an error message on the dash but just ignore it - it’ll go when you replace the fuse).

Thanks I'll pass that on to the garage and see if it narrows things down.

As a bit of further info. The garage have replaced the crank position sensor (but not the plug) without any improvement in the issue. More evidence of the issue not being electrical?

They are going down the IDM route on the fuelling side…
Re-reading your post, are you saying the symptoms are there under heavy engine power/revs, even if stationary?

With vehicle diagnostics, it's always best to go back to the last thing that was done, in this case the clutch.

Did it have a replacement DMF?

It's something they have done or not done when putting it back together, but i bet they don't want to go over all the work again, maybe not plugged something in or tightened something up.

Yeah they're very focussed on it. I didn't get any stationary jolts. Tick over and idle in neutral, and in gear with the clutch disengaged were both normal. The 'jolts' I got occured when pushing the power over 3k revs or so.
