Like the title mentioned, I would like to know if the mechanical parts of the drive train on an automatic Thor 99 are the same as on an 98 GEMS. I may have the option to get a GEMS donation P38A for an Thor main car.

Regards

-There is quite a large diffrence in the eletrical systems, most of the controllers in the car wont be able to be swapped between thor and gems.
-Gems has a 2 pin front diff while Thor has a 4 pin.
-Gems only has rear wheel traction control while thor has 4 wheel, thats why the front diff was upgraded.
-The upper intake along with the fuel rails are different.
-The haz switch and indicator covers changed colour.

I think thats about it, anything else im missing?

Thanks for the quick reply. So mechanical vise the only main difference is the 4 Pin front diff. And this one can be upgraded by change the wheels inside? Are all the transmissions and the core engine the same?

Regards

Ok but if i swap a GEMS into a Thor I will go from 4 Pin to 2 Pin right? And yes that was my plan refurbish all the donated equipment and the swap in total

+1
Yeah the other day i was stripping a thor and found a gems diff centre, so yeah rather confirm whats in there.

If the 4-pin & 2-pin are both standard ratio, then the only reall difference is the 4-pin is generally stronger.

Transfer & gearbox differ between 4.0L & 4.6L.

I never knew the transfer box is diffrent between the two? What changed?

@myrangeP38

What engine size are you talking thor &Gems came in both 4.0 & 4.6
I am not sure if the 4.0 ever had a 4pin diff and only the 4.6 had them in the rear and the front when 4 wheel TC came in after 99.
Different gearboxes between 4.0 & 4.6 although pyhiscally the same size, (at the year Gems).
Lots of differences in the electronics too.

The 98 Gems is the Parts car.
The 99 Thor is the running car.

What of the 98 I can use plug and play?

Probably easier to tell us what you want/expect to change.
As you have both cars you can see the difference in the exterior lights;)
Anything that is electronically controlled would need checking/asking as its all different.

All the body panels are ok :).

As above, what parts are you swapping ? If it's just the drivetrain (based on the first post & title), then the only mechanical difference is the 4-pin front diff in the Thor.

Is something bad on the Thor that needs replacing ?

Do you include engine in “drivetrain” 🤔.

Thanks for all the clarification. First of all i have the transmissions and the differentials in mind. If the core engine without the intake is the same too, I could relaxed refurbish the spare one and just swap it in when it's finished. Both engines have unopened 260k km

Not quite. Although the block & heads are basicall the same, the camshaft pulleys, crank & cam sensors are different between GEMS & Thor. Obviously the intake, but also the coils & brackets. Cooling system pipe routing & radiator are different.
