Hello,

I want to start upgrading my Land rover 110 to go over landing with it. Can you recommend a few mods that can help me? I will also be travelling with my dog, so if you have any recommendations on how I can make his trip also a bit comfy that would be great, since he will be staying in the boot most of the time :)

It depends what sort of overlanding you plan on doing, where you plan on going, and if you are going to use the vehicle for anything else.
What you need for heading to the extreme north is very different to heading down through Africa. If you vehicle is a daily drive you need things that can easily be removed or do not effect its day to day use vs a dedicated camper.

I have done Morocco twice and done several European trips, my preference is to camp light. So I like a hammock and fly sheet, have a tent that drops down off the roof rack (no poles), and have slept in the back on top of the tote boxes I pack supplies in. but my vehicles is a daily drive so when not on an adventure I need to be able to take everything out and use it day to day.

The most important thing is not upgrades, but making sure everything is in perfect reliable mechanical order.

Some good advice above. Standard parts will be easier to source over expensive upgrades when abroad. Keep to steel wheels over alloys as these are stronger and can be repaired or replaced much more easily. The more standard it looks, the less attention it will get. Mechanical condition is more important than add-on extras. There are some good resources on the expedition overland and royal geographic websites amongst others.

And top tip keep in touch here of your progress as we offer valuable help. Here are some important downloadable stickers for your safety.

As has been said, very much depends what your specific use will be. How many people or how much gear will you be carrying? Will you be sleeping in the vehicle, on the vehicle or something else? Do you need to carry all your water and electrical things?

What sort of distances and terrain? Will you be needing enhanced off road ability?

There really are just so many things you could do, to list all of them would take months. And likely many will not be appropriate for your needs. Also budget is likely to play a big part in any decisions too.

For now it is going to be very basic and we will be going through southern EU in summer, so hot weather. Yes right now we are making sure that the car is reliable for long trips, but I just wanted to know whether there are some modifications I can make to make the trip more comfortable /safe

Take a look at companies like Foleys who build expedition vehicles for some ideas. Simple upgrades like seat risers give more legroom. A cubby box with a safe is a good idea. Internal window grills for the rear windows. A roof tent if you want to sleep with the vehicle. Sound proofing will make it more comfortable. The list is endless. But mechanically, keep it well maintained and more standard than lots of expensive bling.

What engine do you have? Depending on the answer, you might be able to retro fit air con. In hot climates this might be very welcome, esp for a dog. Some sunshades might be a good idea too.

If you are hauling lots, some better shocks and maybe even an anti roll bar might be sensible too.

If the vehicle is in top mechanical order then in terms of upgrades I would start with security. Make sure you have a good steering lock, and good pedal/clutch lock. You can fit window grills but I didn't bother as unless you fit them to all windows they will just break a different window, but I did fit a van lock with a padlock on the rear door for an extra layer, and made sure that all of the door locks were in good condition, as they wear overtime you can open them with anything!

The other upgrade I would consider if you are doing long motorway miles down to southern Europe would be a high capacity sump for the transfer box (LINK - available form other places as well). It adds oil capacity and aids with cooling, both of which are a good thing for the transfer box.
Sound proofing and a good dog crate/guard would be next on my list. in terms of order to work on things I would go for:
1 - mechanical condition
2 - under body protection if offroad (steering guard, diff guard, fuel tank guard)
3 - security
4 - long distance comfort for passengers and dog
5 - camping arrangements (sleeping and cooking only at this point)
6 - packing plan (you will need tools, fluids, vehicle spares, ontop of your camping supplies and all need to be accessible and labelled so you can find them)
7 - specific vehicle modifications (offroad ability, camping, etc)

You can get a very long way in a very standard vehicle, I would consider 1, and 2 if going offroad, on my list above the only essentials, throw a box of tools, box of spares, a tent and some sleeping bags in the back and you can go anywhere in the world. Everything else is just to increase your comfort while doing it.

In a similar line to @300bhp/ton some more information about your vehicle (engine, gearbox's, body type etc) and some pictures (everyone likes pictures) might help with recommendations. If it is as it left the factory the advice is very different to if it is a fully kitted challenge truck!
