spent all day sunday in the glorious sunshine at muddy bottom
1st time i had been there, and what fun we had, gained loads of experience of being recoverd and recovering others, everyone was spot on and it just made the day a real pleasure next ones on the 3rd of august i will be defo goin, was anyone from the forum there??

I'm up for taking the freeloader down to Woodlands next sunday. Into just splashing around and getting muddy, though, I'm no wincher! Plenty to roam around in, if your a newbie? What about taking the nippers down...they love it when the car goes all bumpy! is it ok for kids?

hi kids are welcome, theres a snack wagon aswell, there was one other freeloader there last sun,and he gave some things a go with varied success, but the good thing is people are all willing to help with recovery its all part of the enjoyment, you also spend time watching the big boys doing some seriously extreme stuff it is a good day out in my opinion

I've not been to one of these pay and play days before but am thinking of going to Muddy Bottom on Sunday.
Do I need to bring anything with me equipment wise?

I have a high lift jack and some waffles strapped to the landy and it's got a superwinch EPi9.0 but I haven't got anything else.

I've heard people refer to "tree strops", "snatch blocks" and "winch blanket" but I haven't got any of these things nor to be honest am I sure how to use them - I've never tried winching, the vehicle came with it already installed.

Do I need to do a mad dash on Saturday to Keith Gott or similar and pick up these bits?

Also, I don't have a tow bar or any shackles on the back (have shackles on the chassis up front) but I notice the muddybottom site says I'm supposed to have recovery points front and rear - what should I do about that? does it really matter?

hi you really do need rear shackles for defo, the bigger the better buy the best and biggest you can afford as they will pay for them selves in the long run.i have a winch and winch blanket you wont need theese un less you intend to take on the extreme wood course where you have to winch yourselve all the way round, this really is for the big boys with there extreme motors,i use a kinetic rope which is absolutely superb straps are ok but ive seen a few snap and they are no where near as easy to use as a kinetic rope.would be good to meet someone there from the forum it is a superb day and you will have no end of volunteers to recover you or you will end up recovering others its just have a go and see i will be in a white(ish) e reg landrover 90 with landrover offroad in the rear window pop up and introduce yourself if you do decide to go but everyones well friendly

Even though I never got time to have the rear recovery points fixed, I still decided to go to Muddy Bottom yesterday and had a cracking day.

It took me all of 10 minutes to get stuck in a bomb hole that I was told it was unlikely anyone would get through and I did see quite a few people stuck and nobody made it in and out under their own steam.

When the marshall (Adey) came to recover me, first thing he said "so where's your rear recovery point?"... Fortunately, I've got a winch on the front and was able to attach to his vehicle and winch myself out (my first winching experience!).

A few people had gathered by this point and a couple of the chaps (Dave from New Forest Auto Services and Adey the marshall) had a look under the beast and decided that it was a good thing I didn't have a rear recovery point because it probably would have pulled my rear crossmember off... so Dave's going to have a bit of business from me to replace that some time in the next few weeks.

For anyone who's wondering if they should go, it's a great experience and all the people are really friendly and there's no substitute for the advice from guys as knowledgeable as some of the regulars!

what are jate rings, TD5 are all plastic bumpers so would there be somewhere to fix something?

I do have a tow bar but its a stupid adjustable one, so would probably be doing some ploughing.

Also i only have normal S+M tyres on, fronts 75% tread, backs 50% treads. Would these be frowned upon or Ok for playing with?

everyone has a go at most things and you will get stuck at some point, but everyone will be willing to help recover you,ive even recoverd the marshalls when they get stuck.if you have your rear tow points connected to the chassis underneath at the rear then just connect a shackle to this or connect a rope to it just to make it easier for recovery.my towbar is an adjustable one i just stick it on its highest point to keep it out of the way.

good fun if yer like to steer from the rear ;) and the odd tank slapper makes the day really enjoyable!

Where do all the sundays go? Must try and get down there this coming sunday and give the other gaylander some support. Will wander around and say hello.
