Acceleration or steady cruising (some power): no whine
Foot off the accelerator it starts whining like the mrs.
Clutch in and coasting it almost disappears.

I didn't know it could be run without the handbrake drum

Take back prop off and drum and run it in diff lock

Well I'm not advocating driving around without the handbrake long term, but if you have somewhere near you that's fairly flat and quiet (where you won't have to do any hill starts) it could be worth a try. The bolts will be sticking out a bit further as you don't have the thickness of the handbrake drum to space the propshaft away, so judicious use of washers may be needed so you don't run out of thread or foul the UJ yokes.

This is what convinced me it must be something to do with the handbrake.

Thanks I'll try it without the handbrake or rear prop first then again with just the rear prop and no handbrake drum.

On the ramp (free-wheeling) without the handbrake drum there was no whining, even at a reported 110mph!!

I hope so we purposely ran it on the lift wheels free to check for noises as it's an unknown box and has been sat for years! All the bearings felt ok so we thought just try it

Sounds like you've got more equipment to hand than me.

You probably want to try it with some load on to be sure (i.e. when it's trying to push the car along).

Maybe bearing if when lifting off and now it's known not to be drum
Did you check it's full of oil if unknown box? They make funny noises when go low

Yeah it had new oil, I think we'll be making one out of two if time allows otherwise it'll be a trip to A1 Gearboxes they're pretty reasonable normally.

Yes, that's definitely gearboxy. That grunchy noise on the overrun. If you're confident about the transfer box it seems like it would be the primary box that's awry. Wouldn't fancy trusting it on a long trip myself!

There was a lovely paragraph in the old Haynes manual for the Series II which said something like the decision to rebuild the gearbox depends on how much noise and inconvenience the driver is prepared to put up with. I don't think it says that any more.

There are a few people on here who've shown their gearbox rebuilds, and with the right presses and pullers it's not impossible to do at home but or most of us it's usually easier to locate an exchange unit.
