Missing Front Propshaft

We have not long had our Freelander, and i'm just getting more and more info of the Sites like this..
But why didn't i check them out before rushing in to buy a freelander?

I noticed on a web forum/site that it's getting very common for the prop shafts to be removed from a freelander.


Ours is a V plate 2.0 L diesel goes well, HDC lights didn't work as the wires work broken from the gearstick, fixed now

rest was all ok so i thought.

when doing odd jobs on the car i Dropped a roll of tape in the engine bay, and tried to get it out, when i realised that the front Propshaft was missing how shocked was !?

i contacted the bloke i bought it from, he said it must have been like that when he bought it. anyway i was really mad with myself for not doing a full check of the car at the time, i thought i was getting a really good deal.

Well no Point crying over Spilt Milk, i just hope someone else reads this and has a look under a car they are going to buy and checks all is there thats supposed to be.

OK now i'm Looking for a front Prop, but i reckon it was removed because something else is wrong, further down the transmission

how can i be sure the viscous Coupling is working with out a front shaft?

BET the vcu is fooked, why else take it off . . .mind you they really go two wheel drive un use less juice but thats not the idea of a 4x4 really. . .

A Private Sale, about 10 weeks ago.

i thought it was sluggish until i fitted my Rover Ron's box of tricks, it pulls so much better.
I'd have hated it if the 4wd slows them down.

No We Didn't get it off Mondo! Lol

Dont mean to be funny, but didnt you notice how easy the front wheels spin??

I've gone mondo mode and nearly every corner the front tyres try to spin!!

Just pulling off from standstill is hard enough and thats with brand new tyres.

If you want a cheap VCU and prop try some breakers. Simpson Salvage :: York :: have quite a few freelanders in and you could remove the VCU and props and fit to your vehicle.

Thats sounds like a scam!

Contact advertising standards agency for advise, put more pressure on the seller send the heavies round....... that will be Slob, Redhand and Yella lol

Anyone who sells a 4wd vehicle without mentioning the lack of prop is a bandit.

A new prop is big money £1300 or there abouts, you could always hunt for a 2nd hand one.

I didn't notice the front wheel spinning at all. car is very driveable. on the roads.
runs fine,

£139 for the prop isn't to bad, but what get me is what else will be wrong and were will it end?

i suppose i can keep it 2wd for a while. i'll see how it goes in the winter on slippery roads.

eer ken, you'll probably end up noise first in a hedge if yours has the same power as steves

VCUs can be got for around £310 inc vat near me id dont know if that is any use to you

bloody hell these gaylanders are fooking brilliant.. ah take back all i sed about them. its not every car that can spin the front wheels with no prop to connect them to the rest of the drive train. do you know how its done and can it be used on other cars to cut down on uj wear?. if you could then you wouldn't be limited to 2" lifts without putting expensive props and stuff

I read it as front wheel drive train at first. It's a more difficult job but has anyone tried it as a sort of 'reverse' Mondo mode? And did it handle?

Dunno if you can make them rwd, becasue if you remove the front driveshfts would there no be a chance of gearbox oil being thrown out the holes????

If you split the driveshaft CV joints and leave the splined part (cup) in the gearbox, then no oil would leak. The front driveshafts would simply spin and the IRD theoretically would send the power through the VCU to the rear diff and then rear wheels.
