series 3 quick resto

so iv recently bought a series 3 swb because i was offered it at a resonable price moted, taxed and the lot. generally not in bad condition just needs a few things sorting, it managed a 200 mile from down south without any major issues, shes a trooper!

unfortunately i cant drive her yet as im only 19 so its not just a case of paying a few hundred quid to insure it, instead iv gota wait till november when my insurance runs out and in the mean time do a bit of work on it.

apart from servicing n all that lot i wanted to inspect the chassis and various other bits a bit because it has been repaired and patched before, and they havent made a great job of it!

so iv started to do a bit of work, took rear tub off to clean chassis and do any repairs needed.

i will let the picture do the talking,
in the unit, already striped some bits off this was not long after get it


i wouldnt do it like this again haha easier just to remove the roof 1st as on there own they are light enough


new inner mudguards made up as old ones seen better days


dont have many picture of any repairs done to chassis


rather crusty looking front outrigger this has been patched before


chopped out ready to rebuild tomorrow properly this time

No such thing as a quick resto with landies Mines considered quick and its been 2 years now (been on finishing touches the last year though ) Looks like a tidy !

yeah its pretty good, its spent all its life on a small holding type thing with the same owners from new so its pretty genuine, it just needs tidying up really.
i totally agree with you samc88 no such thing as quick resto theres always something, and then theres often the money issue haha, this will become a rolling resto but i wanted to get the chassis sorted and sound and anything else i manage to do is just a bonus

so i have done a bit more today, received the bulkhead bolts so could get the rest of outrigger finished off plus done a bit of painting to the bulkhead, rear door and few other bits.
here are the pics

so on with this outrigger repair
with all the old stuff cut out started to fab up the top and bottom


cutting sides to the correct size i just put a hole with the correct dia for the bolt roughly in right position on the sheet and then just traced all way round it so i could cut to size


with the sides cut to size the fit is good


i made up a sleeve at work clearance size for the bolt then cut down to length for the correct spacing between the sides of the outrigger also gives more support and added strength, i will be welding it to the sides of outrigger as well


and then all the bits which go inside all sprayed with cold galv zinc weld through primer, only a picture of a few bits but i actually did them all


everything tacked up and in position, on the inside i actually welded the sleeve to the sides


and then the finished product i wont be dressing the welds up as theres no real need plus it keeps it stronger

also bit of spraying done ready for color next still deciding on which color to go for


and thats it for the minute, more primer and chassis black is on order so will hopefully get them on monday so i can carry on with rest

just a thought, why not make the nut captive for the bulkhead bolt, make it easier to get it on and off if there is a next time

i do all the welding myself, im pretty much self taught, iv had plenty of practise with my other project a 1950s morris oxford

and the nut yes i never really thought about that but true would make it easier even tho i had to chop the old one off haha

another update on the series, shes coming on nicely been doing a fair bit of painting recently. i have gone for stratos blue bought from the paintman, hes only in retford so not far away.
iv found this stuff a bit hard to use im used to modern basecoat colors and the likes which in comparison are really thin.
if your going to be spraying it as its really thick, even thicker than primer! i think its meant to be brushed on rather than sprayed, it doesnt help that your only supposed to thin it 10% as iv heard any more and you loose a bit of the shine.
it doesnt seem to go on smooth at all, quite orange peely to start of with but then it will really flatten down as it dries usually to a not bad finish.

anyway iv painted the chassis and got a few more bits to finish painting this week, bonnet, wings etc
