Ayup,

Well I've had me lovely landy for two and a half days now, and I bloody love it! (Still thinking of a name - any suggestions - she's a yellow 90, 1986 with no PAS etc.) I've soon got used to the total change in driving position, and it's performing absolutely perfectly. There are a few little niggles, as with anything 21 years old, but the garage are going to sort them out tomorrow (fingers crossed). I do want to carry out any work on her myself when the warranty period expires, so here are a few questions just for future reference!

1) Engine oil is "pushed" back out of the filler cap once the thing gets moving a bit. The cap isn't overly tight in the hole, and can be pulled out with relative ease. Should it be a tighter fit, or is there a problem with pressure somewhere in my engine?

2) The hand-brake (park) light doesn't illuminate on my dashboard when I've got the handbrake on, so it could need a new bulb or some re-wiring is that right?

3) Only the speedo illuminates when the lights are on. Should the fuel level and temp gauge also illuminate?

4) The temperature gauge doesn't show any sign of life (constantly cold) which I take it is down to a nackered sender unit, or a fked gauge. How easy is it to replace either of the two parts?

5) The passenger door doesn't quite open properly from the inside, but does from the outside, just as if the inner handle isn't quite opening the latch fully. How do I adjust the internal handle to open the latch further?

6) Under the bonnet, just below the clutch oil resevoir, there is a loose panel with a diaphram / gasket which looks like it should be well sealed. Why does this need to be sealed and what might happen if I don't get it sorted?

That's everything I can think of for now, so thanks in advance for any feedback!

1. The filler cap could be bunged up with ****e. Is the breather tube clear and does it go into the air intake tube. Whats the oil level like is it high?

2. It probly hasn't got a switch let alone wiring.

3.All the instruments should light up suspect blown bulbs. Fuel level should illuminate but is a reet pain in the arse, cos the ****er starts lighting up at half empty and flashes on and off as you accelerate and go round corners. The temp gauge should light up when the ignition key is first turned. suspect bulb.

4. Its a doddle also suspect wiring.

5. Take the door card off and bend various bits of the mechanism until it works.

6. It's just a cover plate to seal the footwell from the engine compartment, don't worry about it unless the cabs filling with fumes.

take the dipstick put and with the engine running check for oil spraying out of the dipstick tube. if it does you've got crankcase pressurisation usually worn piston rings, blocked crankcase breather or blocked oil pickup in the sump.

Whatever it is You need to get it sorted as left untreated it'll knacker your engine big style.

Thanks for the reply!

I will have to examine the oil cap and breather tube etc. in the morning. The oil level is normal.

With regards to 6, the cover plate thingy. It is actually the same block as the clutch its self, I will have a closer look tomorrow.

Thanks again, you have provided some re-assurance!

pics?

6. it's just a cover plate to seal the engine bay from the footwell, the clutch master cylinder rod adjusting type gubbins stuff is under it.

ah , that wee plate , mines been missing for nearly a year.

Cheers Griffdowg,

The seal had gone on the filler cap, and has just been replaced. We've also got the door working again, just altered the metal rod a bit! Thanks again
