P38a front hub noise and uneven brake wear

After a week of P38 ownership we've started work on the "known" faults, and discovered a few "unknown" ones.

Main one: The front n/s hub is making a "ticking" noise when you drive it. When I took the wheel of and turned it with a bar it's slightly "juddery" as you turn. I'm guessing this is the bearings (rather than UJs etc) - but anything else to check before I order a new hub?

Secondly: Discs were all a bit rusty when we got it, but a nice drive today down some steep hills warmed them up! Alll are ok except o/s rear. The inner side of the disc appears fine, but the outside is only wearing on the outer half (See pic) Is this likely to be the pad breaking up? or something else more serious? The disc appears relatively new - no "lip" or anything.

I'm more used to working on drums... so advice welcome!

It's 4WD, so unless you have both front wheels off the ground you shouldn't be able to turn the wheel enough to get the result you have.
It will turn very slowly with a lot of effort against the VCU, if you can turn it freely, I would suspect the diff and possibly a seized VCU being the cause.
I would replace that disc and the pads and make sure the caliper piston and sliders are free.

Thanks - I should have said I'd jacked up both front wheels, so it the other was spinning too. it just wasn't turning as smoothly as I'd expect.

I would replace that disc and the pads and make sure the caliper piston and sliders are free.

I think that is going to be my plan of attack... fingers crossed!

Check/change the oil in the diff, look for bits of metal when you drain it.
Check the VCU is not seized.

I personally fit new calipers, pads & discs both sides, they are not expensive, no point in gambling with brakes.

+1 on that you cant skimp or cut corners when brakes are concerned, spent a few years tarmac rallying, good brakes make a lot of difference.
