Anyone else noticed this ? Why are they so cheap ? Should I buy an auto ? What's mpg like ?
Has anyone noticed how cheap the td5 autos are on fleabay ?

Having had several autos and now a manual 'box TD5 - I would never have an autobox TD5 again unless it had been fitted with Ashcrofts up graded Torque Converter (TC).
My manual 'box car is 10-15% better on fuel, nicer to drive (except in traffic !!) and altogether a better-feeling car. Cruises better on motorways as I don't have to worry about the autobox dropping out of TC lock-up mode on hills.
D2 prices have been artificially high for the last 2-3yrs imo and are now just finding their own, more realistic level.
Bare in mind that the oldest TD5 is now 15 years old.

check chassis before you buy any ,and read up on ace and sls if still fitted, i like my auto in std form much better than the manuals but unless on a good run fuel economy isnt great

Same here,like the auto,not so much the ecomomy. Price can reflect condition too,many I see now for repairs that actually stop them being used,are in VERY poor condition.Chassis rust,body dents / scratches, tatty interiors with headlining hanging down etc.Many are being worked to death,just like D1's and RRC's before.
D3's are falling to bits nicely - the process will just be quicker and more expensive...

Very useful information guys in not bothered about fuel consumption it will be better than 300tdi I have now, so can anyone tell me why not to have an auto ? And how hard is it to convert to manual box ?

Seigneur, all the tdi's I've had in the past gave better mpg than the TD5 autos.
Why a manual TD5 as opposed to an auto TD5? The torque converter in the TD5 autobox allows too many revs before taking up drive. As a result they can give a 'slipping clutch' feel.
Not really practical to convert TD5 auto to manual.

I have to say the fuel economy is little different between my old 300TDI auto and my TD5 auto.The TD5 has been mapped by Alive tuning and goes almost too well - that's about the only difference between them in terms of performance / economy. They both return about 23mpg locally,mixed towing use,then around 30mpg on a long run.
The 300TDI was better for grip off road though,the TD5 suffers from not having the centre diff lock.
Converting from auto to manual is possible,but hard work,a mate did it the other way round... Better to decide which you want in the first place.

So the torque converter allows too many revs. ? In my mums td5 I change at 2k when does a disco auto change ? I'm not to northerner about fuel I make bio for nothing so not a problem, yeh I was thinking egr decat and a remap at later date

I went for newest/highest spec as possible, when I saw the diff lock I was happy.
