Thanks Everyone for help and ideas.
Will check the pipes. I am no mechanicbut will have a go.

Is it a case of loosening the pipes off to see if there is any oil in there.

Also if there is what causes it to get there.

The engine does take a little persuasion to start on a morning, but once started it turns first click of the key everytime all day long, untill the next morning.

Thanks Again

check for oil in turbo pipes/cyclone breather/pipe to air filter if any oil give them a good clean/swill .with petrol
Just had a quick check, Took the big hose leading to the air filter housing and there is Oil in there. Is this Serious??

Turbo seems clean.
How does this happen? and can it be fixed?
Thanks for help.

could be wrong but I thought these turbos where floated on oil fed from the engine so surely there will be a slight bit of play untill the engine is running and feeding oil to the shaft or am I just being thick and you guys mean to check for excessive play? if so how much is too much?

Right, Just checked, the fins/propeler like things, they move freely either way, but the shaft in the centre that holds them does have no play at all, does not move in or out or side to side. seems solid.

you check for any in and out, axial play.

you'll always have a bit of radial, side to side play as they run on oil.. but it shouldn't be loads.. couple mill?
I ment to say the fins turn freely clockwise and anti clockwise.
The centre shaft does not move at all side to side or in and out.

black is usually unburnt fuel.

rev the engine a bit and it usually fills the pipes up enough to check for splits on the intercooler hoses. looking for oil can also be a sign, check around the intercooler.

it may still have been tweaked, you can buy replacement caps, or they can be carefully removed.

also check the pipe that goes from the turbo side to the pump, it uses pressure to move a diaphragm that adjusts fuelling when on boost. maybe it's gummed up inside.

or a dodgy injector pattern? is it running a bit rough?

It does run a little rough. but there is no oil diesel or water leaks dripping from the engine at all, you could park it on the sitting room carpet and get up the next morning and there would not be a drop of oil or water on it.:)

the oil won't be enough to leak onto the floor.

when the turbo spins an oil mist will get by the seals and into the turbo pipework and intercooler.

if you have any leaks then the air blowing out will also push out a bit of oil, so you can have a little bit of oil around an area.

check your egr as well.

also is it low on power?

This is the first one ive had so not sure about the power, I wouldnt say its very fast but its not slow niether, Im used to driving a 2.4 d none turbo hilux and the defender is a lot faster then that.
Dont think there is any
Ive got all the bits for a service so will be doing that this week.
Will also have a good look around for any ares of oil tomorrow.

Do you think the Turbos gone or might it be somthing less serious??
Cheers

hard to say, turbo doesn't sound like it's gone.

give it a service, check all the air/turbo pipe internals incase the inside is falling apart and blocking things.

if this is brand new to you, then i'd drive it around a bit until you get the feel for it. :)

where are you btw?

I am in County Durham Mate.
Just really getting the feel of it now.
But believe it or not it is my wifes motor, she got it to run around after her two horses, Ive always been a Hilux man myself but really love this Defender. I drove it 120 miles home when we bought it, came up the A1 no bother apart from the black smoke now and then.
