Black Smoke

Defender 90, G Reg. 1990 200TDI 126000 miles.
Has the usual black smoke on start up, but mine seems to come out all the time, especislly when changing gears and pulling away ect.
Engine sounds fine with no oil or water leaks at all, drove 150 mile trip last week when I bought it was fine, apart from the black smoke and the . other nigily problems I have in my other posts.
Is this normal or would new oil filters sort it out???

could also be over fueling, ie to much fuel, not enough air.
check air filter
I had the same issue but it was the turbo spitting oil everywhere
so recon turbo time

Bet you a million dollars the pump has been tweaked
Does it go really well, not much turbo lag and even pulls well from cold?, if the answer is yes to all 3 questions its been messed with.

quite probably been tweaked.
If you just got it, Id get down the autofactors and splash out £50 on a set of filters and oils for it before you do anything else. youll probably find a good service clears some of it up.

Start with the cheapest things first. Change air filter. Sounds also as if it may have had the fuel pump tweaked.

Thanks Everyone, Forgot to mention it has been run on Biofuel up until last week when I got it, I drove the 150 mile on the Biofuel. Could this be a factor??

having seen defenders that have had there pumps tweaked,they belch out black smoke ,pumps been played with IMHO black smoke on start up is normal,they all do this,under acceleration though is not

My 200 smokes all the time, pretty normal under acceleration.
It smokes more when I run it on kero/diesel mix, who cares?

I did try running on a mixture of diesel and old engine oil in mine. It didn't like it and did smoke. I changed the fuel filter and ran some injector cleaner through it. It's fine now.

My 90 has had its pump tweaked a fair bit. It smokes on the usual startup, smokes pulling away with low boost and at high throttle. Doesn't smoke when it's cruising along.

Mine smokes on start up, smokes on full throttle and goes like **** off a shovel...

No Mate the cap is still intact, someone who looked said it had not been touched as the cap is still there.
