Fire Extinguisher mounting

Hi all,
Now I know there are threads on this and I have done a search
I have a disco 1 7 seater 5 door and I am trying to find a suitable location to mount my new fire extinguisher, It is a 2kg Dry powder (Annoyed after realising they do 2ltr foams ) but I cant find anywhere that it would fit and would rather not have it rolling round in the boot which you can't undo without a key cause the spring has gone (next job on the list).
So if anyone has a disco, where have you put yours?

I had a similar problem with a fire extinguisher too. OK, mine is a Disco 2, but this might be of use.

I looked at how LR would do it in RAVE and they recommended that it goes down on the kick panel on the passenger side, but that made reaching the bonnet release lever impossible, and fitting just under the front of the front passenger seat was out of the question too.

In the end I found that it would fit on the trim panel just inside the back tailgate door, between the door and the rear side window.

That position is easy to get at to put the nuts and washers on for fitting and being very near to a door it's also easy and quick to get at if (God forbid) it's ever needed, but it's out of the way when loading up the vehicle. It is also very visible should others need access to it.

One thing to bare in mind, it'll be fitted on a plastic trim, so I would recommend using large "penny" washers behind the trim to spread the load.

Yeah I looked on rave but I reckon it must be for a smaller extinguisher there is no way mine will fit there! I'll go have a look to see if it will fit on the panel if not I might get a smaller one for inside and keep a big one in the boot.

I had one mounted on the front of the passengers seat box and one mounted on the inside of the back door :0

Cheers brian but on mine they have put a speaker on that panel and it's curved so I doubt it will fit on there also slighly worried about it conking someone on the head in a crash :brick: I think I may try mouning it under the passenger seat with some cam buckle straps

Under the front seats must be a winner, lots of room there normally.

good place is also on passengers side of the transmission tunner in the front footwell area, also in the middle of the sloping panel beneath the rear bench, kinda behind the passengers ankles if you get me.

I fitted mine onto the back of metal cubby box, very easy to get at. Let me know if you want a photo?

Mine's on the back door .. you can just see it in this pic .. I used rivnuts to mount it and although it's a small extinguisher all you'd need to do is drill further away from the window. Fairly certain it's wide enough for much larger extinguishers.

Pics of how I mounted it .. basically drill holes, insert rivnuts, bolt down!! Simples ..

How do you maintain them?

The one I have has a CO2 cartridge in it and is checked in exactly the same way as H&S demands all our school fire extinguishers are .. weighed, shaken, and put back! This is an annual check though ...

It is the dry powder ones. The powder can cake up/get hard. So monthly shake it to loosen the powder. In the Navy it was a weekly check. Used a rubber hammer and tape on the side and turn it end for end several times. Condensation is what causes the powder to get hard as well as road vibration when in a vehicle

Could rename this thread "what's in your boot".

My extinguisher is ok on the floor or in the green box along with recovery rope, jump leads, other bit & bobs and wellies.
My other extinguisher is a Halon 1211 dated 1987 still showing ok on the gauge .

I'm a director of a fire detection and suppression company which use to install Halon 1301 in computer rooms so I can say that it's now only illegal to supply or recharge Halon extinguishers, aircraft still use Halon but only in some areas and as far as I know the UK Police don't use Halon.

There is no laws prohibiting the ownership of an extinguisher filled with Halon.

Halon is awesome.

Ok it's illegal but when your ****'s on fire we shan't we worrying about that.

We have halon in the boat, it's simply the best for engine compartment fires.

I don't know of any computer suites that still have it, but it not illegal to use it if u have it.

The only legal Halon about now is reclaimed and the US still uses a lot of it, not many laws on it there.

As u say it the best so far for gasses extinguishing systems go, light and it works and it's only the burnt gas that are unfriendly to environment.

Then there's FM200 systems which is worse for the environment we are told and we have installed a few of those.
