Best way to joint winch power cable?

I'm going to re wire my winch as it wire off the starter motor,

And it's not got a great earth,

I have a isolator, if I want to extend the cables mainly the negative as that goes in to the winch and I don't want to go dismantling that,

Is it best to bolt them together through the connectors and insulate it with heat shrink? Or do I need a crimp or just solder the wires together and insulate?

I'm going to use 35mm welding wire is that ok? How many amps will it draw? It's a warn 9000lb winch with a warn 4.6hp motor.

For all that effort. Why don't you just buy longer cables? Jointing heavy current carrying cables is best avoided

But if you have to then crimp and heat shrink. You will need a proper crimping tool tho. Iv got a pneumatic one if your anywher near me

if you solder the ends or join the cable you alter the resistance of the cable

winch cable is best in one piece with crimped ends

Have a look on here,35mm cable is £5 a meter and if you measure how much you need he will crimp the ends on for you

or if ya mate is an electrician with a crimper he does it for nothing

surely the change in resistance is small enough to be ignored? we gotta be talking in the millionths of an ohm range here

Never effected it that much yes you could crimp it but you still get that drop wether its crimped or soldered. As you introduce resistance about 3-4 milla ohm in joining 2 bits of metal. a silver soldered joint will last longer and not losen over time compared to a crimped fitting. Or go for broke, crimp and solder it.

I'll see how much cable is, I measured up last night think I will need 5m to get from the solinoid to the battery, I might have to joint the negative tho as it goes in to the winch and don't fancy removing the winch and taking it apart.
