Hi all,

i've been reading the forum for quite a while, since getting a defender in october - but not posted too often as of yet....

Basically I got my 200tdi defender 90, and have been going through things that need doing - water ingress problems amongst quite a few others. I bought the land rover with a view to getting a bit more competent on car repair, and to have a bit of fun too.

I've been looking at getting timing belt since i got the vehicle, as the previous owner didn't do it during his 1 1/2 years of ownership, but have been a little uncertain (despite reading lots of how to's), as i'm a little worried about fitting it wrong, so i checked on Saturday with a local garage who were going to get back to me today with a price - and then I could way up the options....

Anyway, last week my water pump started leaking, quite a lot, so I ordered a new part which was delivered on Friday, ready for me to fit on Saturday. To cut a long story short I ran out of time on Saturday to finish the job, so carried on on Sunday and got all but one bolt off the water pump. It's very stuck. In my various attempts (mole grips, heat) I've pretty much rounded the bolt, so i tried banging on a slightly smaller socket, but still no luck.

Anyway, the local garage rang back and I mentioned the issue i've got, he said it shouldn't be a problem and because I've got the new parts should be £250+VAT for that and timing belt. He said I should ring back later this afternoon once he's checked getting the vehicle in (as water pump currently not connected up!). I rang back and he'd gone home, but the bloke I spoke to was uncertain whether they'd take the job on, as "what if the bolt shears?". He said he'd check with the first bloke I spoke to and get back to me tomorrow....

Little unsure what to do now.....there's another garage a little further away (8 miles).

I think I know the answer to this but....If i reassembled the water pump asssembly, would it be safe to drive with it leaking? (I guess the temperature in the car may not be accurate if water isn't flowing properly?)

Any other ideas?

Cut off the bolt head, remove the water pump and have a go at removing bolt with mole grips and wd40. If all else fails cut bolt off flush, drill out and re tap the threads.
I know it all sounds involved but you did say you bought the truck to learn

Use loads of copper grease when you reassemble it. Won't have the same problem again :) do you have a welder? you could weld a nut on to the head of the bolt. also, have you got 6 point sockets? If you haven't then get some and you won't round heads off. irwin bolt grippers are amazing for removing bolts with rounded heads too! Where are you btw? stick your location in to your profile. Someone local might help :)

Use loads of copper grease when you reassemble it.

Good advice, I use copper slip on every nut, bolt, brake pad, wheel... that I ever fit.

When you do the water pump coat the whole bolt in a thin layer of copper grease, if you use too much on these bolts you can contaminate the insides of the pump surface with grease and you can contaminate the gasket and any hylomar etc... you may wish to use.

the only other thing I can add is not to have a big lump of copper grease on the very tip of the bolt, otherwise you might get pressure build up right at the end of the bolt as you wind it in :)

Cheers guys,

I've ordered a set of those Irwin tools, from the reviews they look great.

Any ideas what size the bolt that is stuck is (see attached picture!). I can't find anything online and the sets on ebay are for 300tdi.

Ta,

Gareth

Cheers for the advice guys - managed to get spare bolts today and also irwin bolt grippers arrived yesterday - came off first time!

Just got the piping to put back, got too dark now so will do that in the morning!

I've got a shed full of tools that have only been used once but I'd not be without them. They were bought because they were the only way to do something at the time. I've also got nearly a complete TD5 90 in bits stored in my garage and I'll be a happy bunny if I never need any of the bits as well.

the irwin and socket set should come with any second hand landy closley followed by a mig and a welding short course ;)

Hi have the same problem with a waterpump I got it with 2 broken bolts in, but don't know what length they are or whether they go into the block. Have I got to have them drilled out or can I stud & nut them? Confused!
