A tyre worth thinking about.

Not sure whether this is the right place but I'm sure someone will move it if needed.

So i was up at Holymoorside today all day (6 hours) and my 90 certainly wasn't sloppy. She performed fantastically and I never once felt like another 4x4 there could have beaten her (even the other defenders). The point of this post is that a lot of people ask about tyres so I thought I would say that the Maxxis mudder buckshots I used today were fantastic. I'd say they were as good as any tyre I've ever used (including bfg mud terrain) in the mud today and I will certainly be sticking with them from now on. I have 285/75x16s and that extra ground clearance really worked in my favour and helped me power through places that other people couldn't. I have to admit I was stuck once where I was helpless in the sludge at the bottom of the big drop. (If you were there I was the one who got winched out by that jeep). The only other time I was stuck was down to human error when I tried to cross very deep ruts parallel.
Does anyone else use these tyres and do you feel the same as me?

the only time i got stuck was when a spring over dislocated and wedged againt a tire , i didnt want to drive out risking puncturing the tyre, i was in a 110 with 35" Hankook Dynapro fitted, i think there the most underated tyre and from what ive seen when laning with others perform better than overpriced BFG muds, i spent the day rescueing other 4x4

I had these on my 90 (now sold) and they were fantastic, they were also only £85 each.
unfortunatly, (according to Augusts land rover monthly) new stock is no longer available due to EU noise regulations (not that they were noisy) so if you want some get them while you can.

Yeah I use them in 33x12.5x15

I have also used 31" recip trials in past.

I think the great thing about the buckshot is that they're superb on the road, so when driving to an off road day you can feel happy about any corner.

Off roading at Tong yesterday, i had a great time.

I have only run them once before, and Tong last time was on the recips. The buckshots certainly did the job yesterday.

I got proper stuck once in the hell hole but that is basically undriveable! Otherwise they were great.

I don't know what a simex pattern is like so I can't compare, but I certainly felt them working.

I ran them at 17psi last time, and I'm gonna go lower next time, see how it works (minimum recommended is 10)

I feel that for the money if nothing else they are superb, quality manufacture, much nicer than a stiff remould.

Only niggle is lack of side lugs, they really don't immediatly bite and grab when trying to climb out of ruts or up a side bank.

All in all I did some great routes yesterday, and the buckshots served up nicely.

I have locking diffs so at times I required all four Tyres working at the same time, which again proved no problem for them. I think I had to winch once over a crazy tree root.

A quality tyre I reckon, do the job at sensible prices and a definite daily driver. Would like to try a simex, or heavily side lugged tyre like the recip though, may have to look at mudzillas!

AND yeah it's a crying shame that maxxis are having to discontinue some of their Tyres

Do you mean that small tyre that was in the middle of the boggy section? I ran over it a couple of times because I wasn't about to wade in to move it. Looks like you had to though

i had the rt03s thought they were ok but more of an at tire than proper mud.Were awesome in the snow though. Somebody said they are good in sand but never tried.

no it was in the boggy section where the orange 90 was pulled out off in your pics, i collapsed the rear end when i lost my spring hence pics of me in my shreddies wading in the mud

That section was tough. I was the one that recovered that orange 90 and I ended up joining 2 ropes together to reach it because I couldn't reverse up the slope to get to him. It really was slippery. He was saying "Back, Back, Back" and I was like "You're stuck yourself so how do you expect me to reverse through what you couldn't drive through??? Anyway in the end 2 ropes joined together did it. I was surprised how well the landys were doing. I think they were getting stuck a lot less than others.

They look very similar to my buckshots so I will think about having those next time. I am seriously thinking about trying to import some buckshots but if that works out to be expensive I think I'll go with yours. Cheers for the idea, I've never seen that pattern before.

What ply are the sidewalls ?

I've got kumho's, good grip but only 2 ply sidewalls, that are very soft.

Last time out put a rock through one and another looks like it's fell out with jack the fookin ripper.

Can't make me mind up what to go for next.

6 ply sidewalls on the buckshots, pretty sure.

If not 6 then 8, but I'm saying 6, and definitely no less.

I run mine at 15 psi when offroading, nice grip potential. Would have to be much lower to come off the bead i reckon, they're still quite firm at 15.

Pal of mines just got a set of buckshots on his landy and they look spot on. Sounds like they perform pretty well too.

They definitely perform well and I think if you have the white facing out they look great too. I use chalk pens on mine to keep them sparkling white

Im running my series 3 on 265/75 16's, Insa turbo dakar (bfg mud pattern), and they are simply fantastic! And they're remoulds to boot! They've helped me through some very muddy wet forestry sections, and lastr winter in the snow they were without fault, fairly cheap too!

dick ceepek crushers are the best tyre ive eva used. had them on my 90 when i used it for everyday and mudplugging, very very good. now i have a seperated road car ive put some insa turbos on just because they are better for thick wet horrible claggy mud but no good for road use tho really. still got the dick ceepeks but am looking to sell them
