I suffered a Run away diesel

Finally got my dial gauge rigged up to check the FIP lift timing. It is spot on 1.4mm of lift at TDC. So it must be either the injectors or the pump. I feel if it was the cam lobes it possibly wouldn't have just happened. I'll get the 4 injectors sent off to diesel bob when I have the...

I suffered a Run away diesel

I was going to remove all the followers but then I needed it done asap so skipped it. Probably a silly idea as that will be head off again. Although the smoke wouldn't come and go from followers... Would it.......?

The coolant level has not dropped at all. The difference between the two is white coolant disappears fairly quickly. White diesel smoke hangs in the air. Plus. I can smell it. 😟

I suffered a Run away diesel

Here we go again..... Drive the 40 minute home, was great until the last 5 minutes when I came off the motorway. Clouds of white smoke again. Here is a video link to see while it is idling.

Yes, I think so, I put the belt back exactly the same. Unless it is a bit temperamental. I have a dial gauge on its way so I will check with that to see what the current lift at TDC is, Auxiliary belt removed and sound is no different. 😟

I suffered a Run away diesel

40 minute drive this morning went great. No clouds of white smoke and drove well. Was raining so was difficult to tell if it was road spray or faint white smoke. I'm pretty sure it was road spray...lol Just got to find this tapping. Definitely cam speed and not crank speed. I've done the...

I suffered a Run away diesel

The saga continues but I think it's almost all over ... I did a silly thing....... I did two things and now I don't know which one solved it..... :-( I replaced injector number 3 and then stripped all the timing cover off again just to check the cam pulley. Was perfect but decided to remove the...

250k miles, help with engine health checks/diagnosing

I'm not sure the air intake will effect the actual compression reading. The compression is once the valves are closed and the piston is rising up and compressing the air and fuel mixture. As long as they are all within 10% of each other it is fine. As far as the flow plugs are concerned they are...

250k miles, help with engine health checks/diagnosing

I thought the idea of the twin intake was to balance the air input across all of the cylinders to 160cmm That would mean they are all getting the same air intake. Is one actually fitted to the OP engine. I had a quick read back and couldn't see it anywhere? Or maybe I'm just tired...lol 😴

250k miles, help with engine health checks/diagnosing

I always try and do both to get a comparison but doing it cold will show up problems sooner as all the metal components are cold and relaxed. Once the metal gets hot it expands and then any small gaps are sealed. You can do the timing belt now, the adjustments I'm talking about are on the top of...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Difficult to read but think I got there. I did the valve clearance when I put it all together but no harm in checking again. Re checked the timing beginning of the week and it was spot on. I think it can only be injectors and/or someone has fiddled with the FIP stuff. They have put a boost pin...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Well, I changed number 4 injector for a cheap used one that was sold as off a running engine. Big difference. The two or three knocks from idle when blipping the throttle gently has now gone. I thought it was the vacuum pump 🤣 Smoke is a lot better. Starts easier and idles slightly faster and...

250k miles, help with engine health checks/diagnosing

The spec from land rover is 360 from cold. 400 is high but you are really looking for no more than a ten percent imbalance between all four. Do the compression again stone cold as the metal expands when hot and can hide things. It's just for peace of mind really. Your smoke could well be...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Rigged all 4 up to their fuel pipes while they were off the engine and got my lovely wife to turn the starter while I watched them. 3 of them spay okay and make a ffffff noise, number 4 the spray looks okay but questionable but it makes a pop noise every time it sprays. I'm guessing that's not...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Ah bollocks, Still not right. 🤔🤔😡😡 Was not driving as the lights are not working but my wife broke down so I had to go and save her. Drove fine but I thought I could see a faint smoke stream but put it down to bring paranoid. Did about 12 miles on dual carriageway about 65-70 Then came to a hill...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Hi all, well, it's been a long 4 months repairing it. In-between work and other stuff but I believe it is now fixed. After stripping the head it looks like it was all eight valve stem oil seals. I've had the pistons out and back in and the head off and back in. Has a slight knock just when you...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Well that's the head stripped. No major problems really. All valve stem oil seals had come off there seat so that would cause a problem. They were genuine elring but all very hard and brittle. Oil in 1 and 2 exhaust ports but could be left over from the runaway? Some of the valves had black...

I suffered a Run away diesel

Yes, my last 300 belt snapped and that did about 6 push rods, not one damaged valve. And yes, I am most definitely going to do the valve stem oil seals. (Elring hopefully) I'm removing them just incase one has bent but unlikely being vertical to piston. Main thing is to check after the over...

I suffered a Run away diesel

I did the head gasket about 18 months ago and it wasn't there then. If you remember at the beginning the timing had slipped a tooth, maybe two on the fuel pump. I don't think that would have caused it. I suppose the over reving would. No marks on the pistons from a valve hitting but that doesn't...
