Yep, came from inside the engine, attached to the magnetic sump plug along with the usual swarft.

Doing an oil change on my landy. 2.5 petrol, and this was attached to the sump plug, any ideas? Lighter for scale.

I used tiger seal, can be removed with a hot air gun if needed.

Gearbox was working fine and still is. Can I check the to see where the pin is missing without taking out gearbox?

Update. It was a tooth out, took bloody ages to get it right, had it set up perfect, wound it over a few times-tooth out! Anyway, got it right in the end, and started 1st time! cheers guys.

Is there any reason that I cannot start it briefly once the belt is on, before I fit the timing cover/waterpump/rad?

After watching that video, I reckon i'm a tooth out. Had a read on the net, and it seems that being 1 tooth out can make all the difference. Will strip it down tommorow and have a look.
