The horn on my 2002 TD4 has given up the ghost. Checked the fuses and they are all OK. Are there any obvious checks I can carry out to get to the bottom of the problem? What is the easiest way of checking the horn itself?

Is there a definitive test that you can do to tell if the IRD bearings are worn or nearing that point? I have up and down movement on the IRD within the bearings on my TD4 automatic. Does this mean they are worn or is some degree of movement normal?

I changed the oil in my TD4 IRD at the weekend and the oil that came out smelt 'burnt'. There was little swarf in evidence on the drain plug. Is this usual or is it a sign of the IRD about to let go? Could this also be evidence of the VCU starting to seize up. Car has done about 100,000 miles...

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the wishbone bushes rusted solid onto the wishbone. A new wishbone at about £120 and all was OK. Quite easy to fit yourself.

Sorry I forgot to update this call. In the end I replaced the front tyres and this solved the problem. Strange as the tyres were completely legal but they seemed to have been creating understeer. The snatching as the car straightened out seems to have been from the amount of turn that had to...

Rear tyres are slightly larger but the set up has been like this for over 10K miles. Strange this problem has suddenly occurred. Stranger is it does not happen all the time only very occasionally.

Thanks Paul. I have checked the wheel nuts etc. Is there anything that VCU's don't try to effect? Trouble with VCU is there is no definitive way of checking if they are working or not!!

I had a similar problem to this and it turmed out to be the rear bush on the wishbone had seized solid meaning that the rubber had ripped itself free and was grabbing in side its housing. Essentially there was no suspension movement. After replacing the wishbone and bush all was fine.
