First-Time Land Rover Owner with a Rusty Defender

Great to have another Defender owner in the fold – and sounds like you've got a proper one too: well-used, a bit battered, and full of potential. Classic 2.5 diesel as well – easy to work on with a spanner and a bit of patience. As per the electrical issue that you mention, flickering lights...

    Front outrigger alignment

Great to hear you’re back on it – sounds like proper progress after a long haul! You’re definitely not alone with bulkhead alignment headaches, where things have been replaced, patched or just… aged creatively 😅 A initial thought: If the outriggers have the original support brackets and look...

    Steering wheel rubbing on shroud

I feel for you and I had in the past also faced similar situation when replacing parts around the steering column. This made it worse if they were plastics have warped slightly over time. A suggestion on how to approach would be to start with the instrument panel first, and loosely position it...

    Drive Before I Decide?

Great comments above and it is down to experience. For me the 300TDI is a solid choice and I don't care about A/C or any luxuries. The Defender is to thrive and feel alive with a huge smile on the face.

    Defender 90 advice

TDI 5 sounds about right. I would steer away from MOD or anything that has had multiple owners/drivers. I am sure that you will cherish and it is just a matter on what condition you found it to start first. Money counts, I know, and also best to spend and extra £5k to £10k to get the right model...

    Insurance

The way to play around insurance is to actually shop around. Insurance brokers, compare the market, direct line, aviva, etc. Each of them use a way to check and by shopping around you can find what you are looking for. As always, age of driver, location and lack of claims in the last 5 years...

    Petrol into my diesel DOH!

Good question. I am not an expert. I just grew up having 2 stroke motorcycles and we put so many additives that they seemed to drive on steroids 😆. Would it help? Who knows. Would it damage? I don't think so. In case of doubt, I would add it.

    200/300TDI exhaust brake?

I grew up driving an old 70s van, and for me, using lower gears is the best way to help braking. I would not bother with exhaust brake as it might affect the engine and combustion cycle.

    Petrol into my diesel DOH!

You might also want to put some extra dose of Redex to help clear the system. Then with an empty tank, fill up with premium diesel and extra Redex.

Advice needed on Td5 sun roof shade

A DIY solution is to put some of the blind covers for windows that block out sun/light 100%. It helped sleep my babies and in this case it will look after your baby on those sunny/hot weather. When you want the sun/light back, you just remove it.

    Theft Deterrent- 300TDI 90

All great comments so my response might be redundant. However, I am compelled to answer as I had 2 motorcycles stolen in London in the past. There are two things to do: what is practical and stops theft and what stops thiefs of attempting to steal, - Practical: A hidden switch made wonders for...

    Project value?

Decisions are hard. I parted one a few years ago and I regret it. Yes it costs money and it costs even more to deal with feelings.

I would just like to say

Yes, that is a textbook example of doing stake amazingly great. So many people rush into it and cook for too long when the opposite applies, plenty of prep and then cook as little as needed. Respect.

    To-Do-List when picking up a new 90

I agree 100% on the secret switch. I had it installed back in a 90s car, pre-electronics complication, and it always gave me the piece of mind. However, it does not stop some robbers from lifting the car and getting it away if left overnight somewhere accessible.
