What did you do with your Range Rover today

Got it picked up by a friendly, free Land Rover experienced mechanic to sort out the engine timing and the worn out exhaust manifold bolt. oh, and finally install the Truetrac diff in the rear. Removed a hornets nest before he left, turns out if a dark, protected space is in the same spot for a...

    1980 Range Rover 2 door v8 to 300tdi

As far as I remember, the 2.4 and 2.5 TD's from VM are a straight swap for the V8. And not bad engines neither. Cooling of the back cylinder head is a tad nad, and each cylinder has its own gasket. Apparently moving the the cooling over flow tank higher in the engine bay solves that issue. Never...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

Ah, insurance and road tax! That's why I draw the line at 30 year old cars, that's when the excemptions kick in Germany. Otherwise, simply unaffordable as hobby, and even less as a daily driver...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

Yeah, my feeling as well. Sometimes I get just sooo frustrated... But then I think it through: I sell, get some money, don't have a 4x4, spend money on a new classic 4x4, start car project again from scratch, get frustrated again later with the other car, rinse and repeat. And everytime I sell...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

A G63 would be actually over-powered! All those old G300Ds with 88 hp so... A G230 would be ok, or a G300D turbo. Those are almost affordable. But spare parts and maintenance, no thank you.

    Classic Questions regarding the future

Yes, also an option! I have the goods ones lying around, just in case! Worst case so, if you break a prop shaft, it is not the end of the world neither!

    Classic Questions regarding the future

So that's why my transmission tunnel is welded in... Maybe I am just panicking, and having one of my bouts of wanting new shinney stuff or projects. After all, the LT95 is considered to be bomb proof, right? Either way, after quickly checking on Ashcroft, even the LT77 gets obsolete, or rather...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

They quite dirty meccano sets so! Worst case I can imagine: find a 5-speed RRC gear box and transfer case (easy enough), exchange for the, by then broken, LT95, replace the prop shafts (easy and cheap enough). The trickiest bit would be to fit a new center consol, or modify the old one. That's...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

It's an old dual carb one. Chassis has close to no rust, there some surface one and one spot on the right rock slider, nothing serious. The body needs some love, no rust, but pretty beat up. And a paint job wouldn't hurt neither. Two, or so, years ago I investigated refurbished / refurbishing...

    Classic Questions regarding the future

Hello everyone! Well, I reached again the point where I have to make a decision: do I keep her or not. Last time, I was very much leaning into selling, and didn't, this time I am very much leaning into keeping. As opposed to last time, I want to make it, please don't laugh, rational decision...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Manifold to pipe. I like the idea of clamps, a quick suoerficial search for new exhaust manifolds either returned NIL, tubular ones not compatible with the exhaust or prices above budget. We'll see, she's due for a garage visit anyway to sort out the timing issue.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Me? No, I have barely time working on it. She's off getting the ignition timing sorted at a garage anyway over the winter, and going by how bad the manifolds look, I'd might just add that to the bill. I was, again, ready to sell it. Boe there are two trips on the horizon, Tunesia and Iceland...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Ah, so no MOT... Same ignition timing issues that were, more or less, solved after JLR botched the cam shat installation. I say botched, because it started after that, so the timing chain isn't mounted correctly. Luckily I found a mechanic that, in his words, isn't affraid of tackling it over...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Nice images Mark, especially number 1, 3 and 4! As or the rattle and vibration, I just loosened everything, knacked the exhaust around a bit, after a small knack it floated freely. Only two location where touches a heatshield, just barely, and the chassis, it seems. Some more pushing and...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Ok, I have one last question, and hope someone can ease my, well, unease before going on a 220km round trip to the testing station. When I installed the new exhaust, the right tube going to the manifold was a pain to fit, really really tight. I followed the manual, starting from the rear. I left...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Ha, found it! There are self-cutting nuts, e.g. from Würth. Only need to find someone who sells those in quantities <1000!

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Sooo... The new exhaust is installed! Not leaking, as far as I can tell, and it looks great! Once I'm done with my, dare I say well deserved, beer, I'll clean her up a bit. Tomorrow carbs, lights and checkong of the missing paper work and findings from the last MOT / TÜV. Just one thing: One...

What did you do with your Range Rover today

How comes I need two weeks for a two hour job? Well, either way, I redrilled the flanges for the new exhaust yesterday, those shoupd fit (I didn't have the courage to try today...). And, today, I cleaber each and every leaky joint between transfer case, gear box, engine and oil cooler thermostat...
