thanks folks - I tried the 1/2 tap washer as I had one in the garage - works a treat. Its pretty firm but if that ever comes off it will be underneath and some means of replacing the stud.

the stud seems to come from one of the engine compartment frames - hard to see exactly where

I have a freelander 2 (2007) and the front wheel engine splash guard is loose. One of the nuts that holds it on is missing and the bolt is rusted and seems to have no thread left. Any ideas how I can fix this and ensure that the guard does not fall off? Picture attached thanks,
