previous owner of this engine has definitely messed with the pump, rolled coal like nothing I've ever see before when I put it in mine and got it running. I read somewhere that the removal of the stop start solenoid and it having swarf on would be a sign that the pump has started to wear, but...

So an update, I’ve essentially got no where. Blew out the feed and return from the tank and there was a blockage of some sort in the return. Both are new from the point of starting the rebuild and don’t have any cracks to let in air. Took off output from lift pump as suggested by @Rangieman123...

Will give it a go. Fairly certain we’ve checked the return line but no harm in checking it twice!
