Td5 worn gear in steering box

That doesn't sound too bad. I am in the Highlands so will have to do something like that short term anyway. It goes back together this afternoon until I can work out what's best to do!

Td5 worn gear in steering box

My conclusion also. The UJ was seized on the shaft but slides nicely now. The securing bolt in the UJ slides in a groove parallel to the shaft so if the bolt was not removed, it would not slide the whole way. So someone has had it to bits before!

Td5 worn gear in steering box

Hi Everyone, I haven't been here for a while but my Defender 2005 110 Td5 is getting to an age where things are starting to go wrong! I have had wandering steering, like soft tyres, that the MOT inspector picked up as wear in the steering shaft. Assuming worn UJs, I removed the shaft to find...

    D110 td5 low speed vibration

Well, up to the garage we went this afternoon. The mechanic checked all UJs on the vehicle and declared there was no movement. Nothing obviously wrong. Removed the front prop and everything was perfect. All joints greased and moving without sticking. Removed the rear prop shaft and the rear UJ...

    D110 td5 low speed vibration

The MOT guy should have checked bushes and the props have never been off the vehicle, at least as long as I've had it. Isn't there only one way to line up the prop in the newer Td5's anyway? It goes into th garage tomorrow, so we'll see. I will report back as I am a great believer in the...

    D110 td5 low speed vibration

It is reassuing that the UJ vibration can occur with minor play and any speed range. Well, the prop shaft will be coming off tomorrow regardless. That seems to be the obvious place to start. What would the symptoms be for transfer box bearing failure?

    D110 td5 low speed vibration

I think the vibration would then be there at all speeds, wouldn't it? The MOT guy did jack it up on the ramp and turn wheels but no mention of hand brake binding.

    D110 td5 low speed vibration

OK, I've done en extensive search but can't find much information on this problem. The symptoms are so clearly defined, I'm surprised it hasn't come up before. I'm an experienced LR owner but have been lulled into a false sense of security since having no problems for the last few years! I have...

    Hiya!

New member here, but not new to Defenders. This D110 Td5 is my fourth and until about 90,000 miles has been trouble free. Previouly owned a 200, a 300, then a Td5, now this one. I'm now here looking for advice on a vibration, so I will pop along and post my question in the appropriate question...
